What kind of barn do you have?

Hopefully, the link below is of the barn. The tractors stay under the shed roof on the left and enter from the outside. I have about 1.5-2" clearance between the top of the rops and the bottom of the beam.

The house and barn are in the woods so there are a lot of branches but none are very large. I like the idea of a solid canopy but like I said my decision is based more on getting into the barn as opposed to what I like the most. I've considered cutting out some of the beam but I'm not enough of an engineer to make that call; besides my barn building partner, my daughter, doesn't like the idea. I figured with the removable canopy I could lower the rops but doing that everyday could get old; not to mention forgetting to do it one day...

I was hoping that you might be able to remove some dirt, but that doesn't work to well with concrete. Looks like the way the top of the door is made it would be quite a bit of work to change.
If you get a removable canopy or if it was me anyway, I would get to where I wouldn't put it on after a while. Or I would start leaving the tractor out side with the canopy on. You really need a canopy that will go in the door.
The Wells can be lowered some from the way it comes. You would need to remove the insulation above the ROPS. That way the mounting brackets could be slid about another ¾” – 1”down.

What would be your guess on the height addition with the removal of the insulation? Can it be brought down to the thickness of the metal top or will the contour prevent this?
I'd really hate to leave the tractor outside since I've done so much work to avoid it. Bottom line is I need a canopy.

I'll look at mine tomorrow, but I think that would take it down to under an inch.

I'm heading to the MF dealer this morning to see if they can get me a Wells Ag canopy. I've been able to do some rearranging in the barn and it looks like I can park the tractor in a different place. This new location gives me 5.5" of clearance.

I really like the design of the Tuff Top but what I really want is something solid; Rusty, thanks for all your help!

Jerry,
Is the canopy easy to remove? I have thought about getting one, but with the bush hoggin' that I'll be doing I think that it will get in the way of low limbs etc. Is the canopy a problem in those situations?

No, it wouldn't be what I would easy to remove. You would have to remove four bolts from the upright frames or the four u-bolts on the ROPS. Like most things there is a trade off. Any canopy will get in the way of limbs if they are at the right height, but I sure can deal with that problem to have the shade.

Well I ordered the Wells Ag canopy in diamond plate aluminum through the dealer I bought my tractor from (Cumberland Tractor in Fayetteville, NC). I figured if I start bending it up at least I won't be knocking off paint...
As it turns out they had never heard of Wells but it only took a phone call and he ordered two (free shipping with two or more); looks like a new partnership is born.
If anyone in Eastern North Carolina is looking for a tractor you can't beat Charlie at Cumberland Tractor; Family owned since the begining of time and now run by the sons. One of those places where you can just sit around and talk if you want. When I first got my 1540 I thought I had a 4wd problem. One of the mechanics drove me out to my place (30 miles away) and took care of it there; turned out to be more of an operator problem...

The new canopy came in a few days after ordering. It took my wife and I less than an hour to install. We didn't exactly follow instructions; they called for mounting brackets on the rops, then the canopy on the brackets. We opted for putting it all together on the ground and then attaching to the tractor. I haven't measured the height increase yet, but it fits in the door.

I used it last weekend and I couldn't believe the difference.

I'm going to build my own. Plywood and an aluminum angle stock frame. Mounted below the top of the ROPS so it does not increase the height. Finish will be sand and seal, then primer, then two coats of bright red house paint. Unless I leave it hanging on a branch some place, it should last for years. It will also be very easy to remove for when I am digging in the woods - using pin type mounts u-bolted to the ROPS.

Pictures will follow when I get it done. Probably during the winter.
