Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

I knew something was up. I haven't seen Mike post for some time. I hate that happened. I know that some of the discussions were heated at times, but I think Mike's knowledge of oil here is & will be missed. To say he is a die hard amsoil man is an under statment.Mike helped me out with alot of info. when I went from dino to synethetic.& I went with mobil instead of amsoil , but he didn't care. I think he isn't so much an amsoil fan , I think he just hates dino, which now that I have all the facts about dino (thanks to Mike) I don't like it myself. I miss his knowledge of oil & wish he could or would return. If I knew what forum he went to I would go there .I may get kicked off for this, but if it weren't for the people on here , there wouldn't be a forum ! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If that were the case we would all be in trouble.

See, heres where I differ. I call it spin. A molded statistic designed to make a point. I think synthetics are fine and use them for certain applications myself. For me to take all that is said by him and a few others as "just the facts" would be like calling CBS an objective news source. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

Mybe I'am a sucker ,but until I can prove someone wrong I believe them. With that said who has been able to prove him(Mike) wrong? I had oil test performed on my dino oil at 3000 mi & it was trashed. I thought it was good oil ! He ( Mike ) has posted his # s for his oil test using amsoil & they showed to be good. a good group 4 Synthetic will outlast dino, it saves me money over a years time doing longer drains , better protection & for me I'am not under 1 of my 5 vehicles or tractor changing oil all the time. Synthetic has set me free from oil changes every other mo. For me it's great & I think Mike for what I have learned about synthetic oil as I don't have time to research the info. that he has.If there are others that want to stick with dino & change oil every 3000 & waste money & time I'am ok with that . No hard feelings, but I do feel that Mike knows his stuff & wouldn't lie about his info.

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

I'll chime in as a Mike supporter as well. I too learned a great deal from his posts. I've always been a synthetic user (Group 3 hydrocracked fake synthetic as it turned out), but didn't know anything about Amsoil or the different oil groups until reading Mike's posts. I subsequently searched for and read a bunch about the subject myself - both Amsoil's own "propaganda" and seemingly legit 3rd party info. It made me even more of a believer. I'm lucky to have an Amsoil distribution warehouse close by (and they sell some of it at Canadian Tire as well), so now that's all I use.

I never understood why the oil discussions sometimes get heated - I don't think either side is necessarily trying to push their beliefs on others, just presenting information as they know it. Everyone is free to use what they want and to read or ignore posts as they wish, so why the animosity /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I personally found Mike's posts informative and never found them offensive. Then again, I was already brainwashed about synthetics before I even found TBN ...

Now, on the subject of presenting information and at the risk of stroking some people's fur backwards, has anyone looked into the new Amsoil air and oil filters? Synthetic nanofiber technology that supposedly gives you up to 4 years use from the air filter and 1 year from the oil filter. They look good to me and I'll be switching to them at my next change.

If you don't care for Amsoil, disregard the previous paragraph ... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A question to those points. I agree with the time issue. No debate that longer interval means fewer changes.. etc.

But the waste money issue? It's not rocket science to see that the average synth oil costs enough 'x' of 'regular' oil that you could in fact do 2x maybee 3x the changes of dino, vs synthetic.. again.. that might get you the same milage, and you do want to change the oil when it is no longer performing and protecting.. but that just comes down to the time issue again.. due to the comparitively steep price of synthetic oil, compaired to common branded dino.. etc.

In the case where you are changing the dino before it is exhausted, and while it is still offering protection.. then?? there should be no 'real' issue ohter than time / amount of oil changes.. not a milage / money issue.

I do believe there are deffinated areas where synth oil wins hands down. but in cases where dino is providing recomended protection.. how much is that 'extra' protection that synth provides 'costing' you? Factored out.. is it really a net savings on $$? .. or only time?

I think another issue is quality... I don't see oil quality as the big issue either.. I see engine quality as queastionable... For example.. My old tractor engines... No argument that they have seen years of hard work and probably poor maintenance.. and have been run in the roughest of conditions... They started life on dino oil.. and old technology dino oil at that. Many farmers even used 'used' oil from their auto's to put in the tractor.. These engines .. like the ones I have are 50-60 ys old.. still going strong... Fast forward to 80's, and 90's... Lucky to get these cheap little disposable alumin blocked 3 & 4 cyl high rpm jopbs to last long enough to even get body rust.. or have cracked dashboards... they wear out to darned fast... I don't see that as an oil failure.. I see that as a bean counter issue with the manufacturers finding that they might save $ 1.50 per engine and reducing it's quality 50%.. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

Ok, Chris, here's my math. The dino that I was using cost 1.50 per qt.(it maybe more now).I changed oil every 3000 mi & had oil test. The oil was trash. Here's the math; dino 1.50 per qt x5 qts for 3000 mi + 5.00 for oil filter =12.50. 12.50 x 5 oil changes per yr =62.50. x 5 vehicles = 312.50

5 qts of mobil 1 E.P.( 15000 mi drain) is 25.00 for 5 qts.+ 2 oil filters @ 5.00 ea=35.00 for 1 year oil change. That's a savings of 27.50 per yr .cost to use synthetic oil in 5 vehicles for 1 year = 137.50. 175.00 per yr. savings for me & my test come back fine . Show me where dino will cost me less than synthetic & I'll go back

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

What dino oil were you using that cost $1.50/qt and was trash after 3,000 miles?

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

penzoil 5 w 30 & exxon 5w30

Re: Can\'t Believe the Difference!

In your situation, using Pennzoil and Exxon dino oils, it makes sense to switch to synthetic.

Others, using different dino oils, might come to a different conclusion. For example, using a dino oil that can go to 6,000 miles drops the savings to only $18.75.
