Looks like an "iron ore" melting pot, used in a small mining operation.

My first thought was foundry related, but the lack of a spout of any type around the rim worried me. Thanks...!!!!

It's totaly obvious, it's a 2 pony chariot.

If that's not it, it might be for carrying the slag skimmed off the top.

Wife wants a herd or is it a covey for her garden now.

Not to hijack, but

Our country road is just horrendously bad and I have often wanted to create a 'folk art' monument made up of car parts discarded by the roadside in hope that the municipality get the message.

I can just hear that conversation. Them: "You can't put that junk on the side of the road". You: "Actually it's your junk. I've kindly gathered it together so it's easier for you to find".
