Can't get the grease gun off the grease fitting..am I retarded?

For future reference: Left hand rotation drill bits are available. These work very well for broken Zerks. Just drill in reverse with a bit slightly smaller than the threads and the zerk will screw right out on the bit. Works well on other broken bolts as well. Much better than an EZ-OUT as the left-hand bit doesn't expand the bolt.

Hi everybody, By chance I found an easy way to remove the greasing gun from the zerk (i'm using a metal extension) without to much stress: instead of pulling in the direction of the axis of the zerk or extension I make a small motion away from the axis. The greasing gun then comes away very easily.

If you unscrew the hex part it WILL remove the chuck . If you hold the hex part and unscrew the cylindrical part with a pair of multigrips you will find this adjusts the jaws . Leave this part 1 turn loose and simply screw/unsrew with your fingers as the need arises .

I just bought a Model 1134 pistol grip Lincoln grease gun. It came with Lincoln's 5852 coupler and I also purchased Lincoln's Heavy Duty 5845 coupler. These couplers do not seem to be able to adjust the jaws. Do you know specific couplers (Brand / Model) that adjust? I went to a NAPA Auto store and asked if they knew of any adjustable couplers and the individual had no idea.

I have ordered a Kubota L3400HST with FEL and a Woods BH80X and I would like to avoid having problems getting the coupler off as has been discussed.

Thanks

I was messing around with the couplers not attached to grease gun yet and found them hard to get off a grease fitting on a garden tractor. I was able to unscrew the Lincoln 5852 coupler to get it off the fitting. I believe this is the adjustment discussed in this thread. However, for the coupler to come off it essentially fell apart (i.e. the two bodies were separated and the spring and ball fell out). Like I said, I did not have it attached to the grease gun so the coupler was dry. I assume that plays a role.

I will keep playing around, hopefully it does not lead to damage...

Go back to where you purchased the Lincoln and buy their cheapest tip - I believe it may be Lincoln Guardian - for some reason the cheapies don't grip as tightly. Go figure.

You must leave it on the hose/tube for a little leverage . By trying to do it the way you did you have had to undo it to far . Know you know how it works , leave the cylindrical tip one turn loose from the hex part . Do not undo the hex part from the hose . You will now find that with a little wriggle it will come off easily .

Yeah, I threaded the tube section on to get it off. I would never had known about this adjustment without this site. Hopefully, it works better after I load the gun with grease and run grease through the coupler.

I ordered the gun and coupler on-line. I also have on order the Lincoln extension kit (Model 58000).

I will keep in mind the guardian version you mention. It sounds like the couplers can be trial and error to find one that works best. Any other couplers folks have had good luck with that are available at Auto Zone, NAPA, Walmart, etc? It would be nice not to have to oder it on-line because I always find myself buying more to get the free shipping...

I should have done this a while ago . This is a picture of a Zerk Tip . The arrow on the right is the parting line where the two pieces join . The arrow on the left is the part that screws onto the hose and is usually hex shape . This particular one is knurled to allow finger adjustment . Leave the two halves about one turn loose . If it leaks a little , nip it up with your fingers . If it gets stuck on the Zerk , loosen it a little . The part number is also on the picture and i'll attach the link . Good luck .Catalog

Just thought I would update my greasing experience so far... I have found that using the Lincoln Press-on 90 Degree (5859), Straight Extension (5855), and Needle Nozzle (82784) I was able to grease my loader (Kubota LA463) and backhoe (Woods BH-80X). I like using these lube accessories as I press them on the grease fittings and do not have the difficulty removing the hydraulic coupler from the fittings. I originally tried attaching the coupler to the grease fittings and it was difficult to remove even with the adjustment of the hydraulic coupler. I had to use the needle nozzle on one grease fitting on the loader as it was painted and the press on straight extension was not effective in that the grease would spew out rather than go in. Luckily, the needle nose pressed on the fitting worked. Hopefully, these accessories continue to work...
