Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

Nilesw -

The old saying: "Lefty-loosey / right-ey - tight-ey" works in my case (so normal "right-handed" threads = clockwise to tighten)

I attached a picture I took once while greasing my spindles and rotating the blades. The picture shows me loosening the fastening bolt (pushing down on the left side = counter-clockwise).

I since have bought a 30 mm combination wrench - rather than the big adjustable.

Hope that helps! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cheers,

Dan

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

There are two types of torque wrenches. Beam and click. The beam has a pointer and isn't the choice of many people any longer. It is outdated technology. The click torque wrench, will give you a click sound when it reaches the pre determined amount of torque. Since this is a mower deck, not some sophisticated piece of equipment, I suggest that you look at some of the catalog stores, such as Harbor Freight or Northern. I would purchase a 1/2" drive unit for ease of use. You might also try e Bay. I have seen some good buys on there for Snap-On torque wrenches. One thing to remember, that most of the national known brands are all made by the same company. I don't know if China has gotten into making them as of yet, but you can bet that if they haven't they will. Accuracy is a relative factor to the extent of the type of work that you will be doing with it. Go for price and then accuracy if new. If used, then go for what you can afford and save a buck on. As long as it works, the setting will be close enough for what you will be doing. If you live close to me, then I will let you use mine. I have 2 and only use one at a time. This is an expensive tool to be only used a couple times of the year. Where are you located???? No time like the present to fill in your profile..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

I've had to cut the nuts off with a torch before....on an old cub cadet....I wouldn't suggest it unless you have no other choice as you take the risk of ruining the spindle.

Keep trying and be patient....and find someone with an impact as already stated.

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

Yeah, don't use the impact for replacement. The fine threads damage easily by over-torque and new spindles are about $40.00 each. I learned the hard way so you don't have to LOL !

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

I had a MMM tune up day last saturday. Scraped out all the crud, newly sharpened blades, grease, new synthetic gearbox fluid, touch up paint, and to top it off, cleaned and waxed!
I know the wax is a bit too much, but I figure anything I paid more for than some cars I have owned gets taken care of.
Nothing beats Castrol Super Clean for stuff like that, takes ALL the dirt off almost instantly.

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

Junkman is right on - The MMM blade bolts are right hand thread (on my deck, model RCK48-15BX). I use a 30mm half inch drive socket in my 1950's Craftsman breaker bar with pipe extensions as required by the stubbornness of the situation. Hanging the deck from the chainfall with appropriate blocking helps a whole lot.

Use same socket in my equally elderly Craftsman beam-type torque wrench to apply 90 Ft-Lbs per MMM manual. I always apply a tiny amount of grease to the bolts, partly to improve torque accuracy and partly to discourage siezing up in the future.

Now starts the debate....... does greased theads change the torque values?? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif (I use Never Seize)

does greased theads change the torque values??

Probably no more than the inaccuracy of any given torque wrench /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
