Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

Good question. I've always done it that way (therefore it must be right /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif). What it does do is make the process of adding a tad more torque a little smoother rather than jumping because of stick-slip friction.

Is this a more accurate way to get a desired torque number? Beats me but I'll bet the answer is out there somewhere.

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

All the manuals that I have seen have the torque values set with "clean dry threads". I was told once by a GM engineer that if you grease the threads that you should add about 5% to the torque number to compensate. This was his opinion, not a engineered study. Let the debate continue..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Junkman I am also a firm believer of Never Seize. I learned to use it back when I used to work on motorcycles with aluminum castings. It really prevented galling and an engine was much easier to disassemble at a later date if you used it. Never Seize and an impact screwdriver were lifesavers back then. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mine were tough the first time too. You don't need a torque wrench or an impact wrench, though they should work well. A really heavy duty rachet wrench with a 2' to 4' pipe extention for the handle will do fine as will a really large crescent wrench with a pipe handle extender. Getting that slow but high torque from the wide radius on the handle makes it like cutting butter. They remove counterclockwise and go on clockwise just like most others do. Block the blade with a short 2x4. The washers are cupped. As the several pieces come off, look carefully at their locations and look for grass staining on the "down" side of the washer to memorize where things go back on. A big vice and angle grinder do well for sharpening. Just make sure the sides are balanced-a large finish nail in a garage wall stud will easily help determine whether the blade's balanced. When reattaching, you don't need to worry about torque tolerances-this ain't a head bolt for an aluminum head on a diesel block or anything touchy like that. Just tighten till it's nice & snug. That cupped washer will keep it on fine. I've done mine quite a few times. By the way, an electric hoist hanging from sturdy garage trusses sure makes turning that deck over a whole lot easier.

Any reason you're removing the mulch stuff? You gotta have the right conditions to use it, but I'd never dream of takin' my mulcher off & goin' back to "normal".

Impact wrench got them off in about 3 seconds. I just was too lazy last night to get it out since it was still packed away from my move. I took the mulching kit off too and those funny looking mulching blades off and new normal cutting blades back on. Thanks all for the help!!

OOOps...Looks like you got it figured out. I should have read your last post before I posted.

Ahhh Impact wrenches, Oh how I love them....As long as you are not on the receiving end and you don't have one!

Re: Can\'t get the @#*&@ MMM Blades off!!

Danny,

You said "nothing beats Castrol Super Clean...." I couldn't agree with you more. I don't know what they put in that stuff and I don't want to know, but it's amazing. It takes diesel residue, grease, and anything else right off my FEL. I inject the stuff right into my pressure washer. Regular detergent soap and water doesn't touch it. -Amazing stuff. Pretty sure it would go over too well if the dog got into it.
