I have installed hundreds of them in marine applications but I've never made one...

since pictures are deemed so highly here...try this link for some ideas...

Koenig made one for jeep and land rover. They come up on eBay and eBay.uk every once in a while. A chain saw engine? I think you yourself will have more pulling power. The gearing and transmission will eat up much of that engines HP

A machine shop could turn out one of those capstans. From the chainsaw shaft, to the capstan shaft, it would have to be geared down a good bit.

Simpson Capstan Winch

Use this with low stretch polyester rope instead of wire cable.. A light pull on the rope will start the winch pulling. Continue taking in rope as the winch does the work. Stop pulling and the winch stops pulling. Capstan style allows for virtually unlimited length of rope as the rope doesn't coil onto the drum. The winch can be anchored away from the load or tethered to the load with the rope secured at destination. Excellent for hunting, four wheeling, pulling logs, loading a boat onto the trailer, or up a steep slope. Used by rescue personnel for it's light weight and dependability. 10 year warranty for the capstan unit. Comes with tethering cable. Line speed varies from 22 to 42 feet per minute depending on load and motor size.

Simpson Capstan Rope Winch is available in two models, either powered by a lightweight Honda gas engine or attaches to most chainsaws. It pulls up to 2,500 lbs (2000 lbs. with Honda motor). It's excellent for pulling big game animals, boats, and for winching stuck vehicles out of extreme locations.

You can pull loads long distances without overheating the motor or experiencing loss of pulling power. Rope is safer than cable if it breaks or snaps back.

The capstan type winch is unique, you're not limited to the length of cable that a drum will hold and the pulling power does not decrease as the drum fills as is the case with drum type winches. You can take up slack in the winch line or play out line, by hand, without running the winch.

Model CS attaches to your chain saw. Saw must be less than 3.5 cubic inch. Needs 3/8" pitch drive sprocket. 2500# capacity depending on size of Chain Saw.
Model SP comes with a 3 cubic inch motor. Can easily mount to a rigid pack frame. Capacity of 2000#.

Greenlee used to make a 110v unit that we used to pull electrical cable into conduits using 3/4" rope....pretty slow but it was better than 6 men tugging

You might google around some, I know they build them for chainsaws. I have one that I have had for years, but it has a regular line drum on it.

I mounted a car rim on my tractor rear tire and used that to set and pull my well pump

I assume you jacked the rear end up, or did you just chase the tractor around with the rope?

I saw two guys do that one time with a truck. Thought they were pretty cool, till the milk crates the truck was setting on crushed, and the truck started rolling down their drive way, in gear.:D

Capstan winches are pretty common in the communications tower world. A lot of them I've seen plug into a 2" receiver and are used for hauling antennas and equipment up and down the tower. Most run on 110AC but a few I've seen run on 12vDC

I built one out of a piece of 7" round steel stock. I turned a 6.5" radius in it, then countersunk a hole in one end. I used a pto coupling that I turned the end down to fit the drilled hole and pressed it in, then welded it. The design worked fine but the speed at idle was still a little too fast. I am in Willow Hill, Pa or I would post a picture of it. David from jax

I have been meaning to make one that runs off the PTO on my Kubota. I want to take a 4x4 front axle with an open diff and use the short shaft side and find another short shaft and weld it in the center of a drum and shorten the long side tube to take the drummed shorter shaft.

I would use the brakes to operate it. Tighten the non drum side untill the winch start to turn and loosen it to stop. The tractor never stops running that way and if you had a rope to work the brake it would be remote control. If you kept the brakes intact on the drum side, you could use that to lower a load if you had it rigged for overhead lifting.

I always thought a hydraulic one would be natz azz around the farm.

something mounted to the front of the tractor, like a hydraulic motor running the input to a brush hog gear box with a capstan cylinder on the other end. feather the remote/FEL valve for precise work.

takeing a cue from the old miltary trucks
