Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

Hey, how do you like the V10 gas Excursion? I'm sure it's no news to you that they have dropped in value faster than a lead balloon with gas sky rocketing up. A dealer passed on an '01 4X4 gas Excursion at Mannheim auction in Nashville last week for $10,500 and it only had 60k miles on it. It didn't sell.

Since I don't drive much, if I can run across an '02 or newer Limited Excursion for well under 10K, I may snag one. I've just never driven a gas powered one and have heard that they are really weak on power. I wouldn't try to tow with one, I have a diesel for that, I'm just curious how they are to drive.

Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

I own a VW Passat TDI wagon. The turbocharged engine has 134hp w/ 247 ft-lbs of torque. With a five speed automatic transmission, I get slightly better than the EPA's 27mpg city / 38mpg highway rating. It has a surprising amount of pickup (don't let the hp rating fool you) at any speed. It's a comfortable car with many safety features! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

I just picked up my new company car, a Chevy Uplander, 8 days old now. On a trip through Vermont, I saw 22.5-22.7 mpg on the ride up, highway at 70 mph on cruise and back roads with attention to light throttle. On the ride home down I-89, I saw 22.3 at speeds hitting 80+ /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. I was suprised at what little difference there was in the mpg. I expected a bigger difference. We'll see what it averages down the road, only 1500 miles on it now.

I thought it very interesting that GM lost ground on fuel mileage when they came out with the Uplander and other versions of that van. The previous model Venture, would get 25 to 27 mpg on the highway. You are getting very close to sticker on your Uplander. Maybe it will get better with more miles on it.

Re: Car milage \'comparisons\'

I think the Uplander was developed for 2005 when people were still very comfortable with gas prices and wanted better performance. It's still kind of a dog on long highway hills, with the cruise set at around 70 it will downshift from "blend" right to "puree" and back continuously unless you turn off cruise and modulate your speed manually.
