Carbonized diesel intake manifold

Fine, believe that, maybe you work with these vehicles more than 10 hours a day, like I do, and have PERSONALLY seen and know people with different driving habits than I do. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Oh, why don't they have this issue-as much- in Europe, there are different parameters for the EGR control, yes the fuel is different, but VW didn't have intake manifold carbon build up issues until the EGR valve was added to the system. We never saw this in '83, '84, '85, '86, or '87.

LOL, no one ever had a water cooled EGR diesel valve assembly for lowering NOx emissions prior to VW TDIs......and they would NEVER have been allowed in the US into BIN V to be sold here in the first place without the water cooled EGR to begin with due to the high NOx output.

Remember, at the center of each and every soot molecule is a sulfur atom....no sulfur in the fuel, no coalesed soot in the exhaust and particulate matter goes way down.

But how did that sulfur atom get into the intake tract to be deposited as soot? The EGR and PCV systems. Disable them, and no more problem since the engine will only be getting clean cold air. Remove sulfur from the fuel and maybe no more problem.

I think we all are in agreement that there is more than one way to solve the problem. Myself, I would simply take care of it now by disabling the EGR and rerouting the PCV but you're welcome to wait and try the ULSF but by then you'll need to reclean.

Don't forget the intercooler. Major amounts of goo in there too. Lot's of performance to be had by cooling the intake air.

"due to the high NOx output". Well, then what is the catalyst for? I still have never seen an intake manifold clogging issue on a VW diesel engine, either turbo or naturally aspirated, before the EGR valve was added. The EGR valve DOES have a very good feature added to it, it is a butterfly that shuts air flow off completely when the ignition switch is turned off, preventing "diesel run- on", caused by oil being sucked out of the crankcase. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Now that is something you don't want to experience while driving; it's scary when the car is parked.

Come on.

The only reason VW TDI turbodiesel engines have a water cooled EGR is to lower the Nitrogen Oxides enough to allow them to be sold on a limited basis in North America in BIN V.

You didn't really think the platinum-palladium catalyst was capable of reducing nitrogen oxides did you? This is an oxidizing catalyst @ 750*F+, not a reducing catalyst ....... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Well, ok then. A question marks usually means that a question has been asked. The rest of your statement, who cares. The original post mentioned that the car was driven on short trips and fuel was obtained from a high turn over station. My original reply was that the fuel is NOT the issue, and it still isn't. I have to ask, SKYPUP, what is your personal experience with VW diesels?

Our TDIs have always worked just fine, thank you. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You still don't understand about the low quality sulfur fuel, the cooled EGR, NOx, or the Noack volatility do you?

BTW, the platinum-palladium catalyst is for the oxidation of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, NOT for nitrogen oxides like you thought.

No matter what you talk about there will be those that dont understand the fundamentals and have their own thoughts about how systems are unnescisary. These folks instead of making repairs, will elimainate the systems they dont like or understand ,then cause more issues for the environmentalists to complain about like in the SUV thread. We have seen the same thing over the years with cat's and fuel injection. People will remove them and replace with something more familliar to them. Its hard to debate with someone who has their own idea of what is right.

Well, I guess that just about sums it all up- over and out.

Sure will be great when ULSD comes online in Canada and the USA next summer, immediately 95% of all these diesel fuel problems will cease to exist! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
