Here is some progress on building a shed roof onto my storage container. We got the 4 6"X6" post set in the ground. The tops still have to be cut level with each other. I have a few questions: The posts are 12' apart. What size beam should I be putting on the posts ? The posts & beam are 12' from the container. The container is 8'7" off the ground. I plan on through bolting two 2"X4" plates to the top of the container to nail my roof rafters to. What size roof rafters should I use ? On the post and beam side I would like to get the most height I can, that is going to leave me with a little pitch. As for the roof I plan on using metal roofing. What size perlings do I need to use ? I am worried about snow load where we are. Thanks for the help John.

John, I used 5 posts and they are 10' apart instead of 12' like yours. I used 3-1/2" deck screws to attach 2x6s as a beam. I didn't bolt them like many do. If I had needed more strength, I'd have put one 2x6 on the inside and another on the outside of the post. You can make the outside beam fit perfectly, by waiting until you get your rafters up on the inside beam and then put the outside beam on and slide it up to touch the rafters. You can use 2x8s for the beam(s) if you want to be sure they will not sag. Turn the crown up. Also you can double your end rafters by putting one on each side of your post. Add some ribs between the rafters and it will give super strength to your sides if you are boxing in the end.
