DAP,

Can you describe how the trailer was packaged when you received it, and did it come to your place or a freight terminal? Any hidden hassles in getting it?

Thanks, I'm really interested in the tandem version and appreciate your insights.

Junkman, I'm still a (fairly) young guy. How long will I have to live before I can begin a successful assembly? )</font>

I can't say how long you will live, but hopefully for a very long time after I am gone, and I hope to be here for a long time also. None of us know how many days, weeks, months, years we will have on this earth. That is the province of G_d. As for how long before you can begin a successful assembly???? I would say about 5 minutes after you finish reading the directions. Back in the 1960's, I purchased a garage door operator that came with a 20 page manual to explain how to install and adjust it. On page 5, there was a box at the top of the page that had in large letters, "Now that you are stuck and reading this manual, finish reading it before proceeding any further. Unless you read the entire manual before starting installation, you will be making mistakes that will require you to start over again." I always thought that it took the manufacturer a lot of guts to put that into the manual, but it was right on target. Most people just read to a certain point and then tried to assemble the unit. I also was one of them. Now, I read all the manual first, even if I don't follow all of it or remember all of it. "Measure twice, cut once." /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Snow ... FULL assembly is required...as I recollect, it came via UPS (I belive the mfg. covered the shipping). For cost reasons, it came in 3 boxes with the largest being about 1x3x6. The jack came in a small separate box.

But it was UPSed to my door. And considering my driveway, that's sayin something.

First post, what a GREAT site. I have an E-Z trail running gear that I made a box for, works great. Check their web site
www.e-ztrail.com. Look at compact wagons section. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Nice looking gear ddbuck, where did you get it and how much? They don't mention either on their site /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I got the running gear at the WPS farm show in Green Bay about 10 years ago. The E-Z Jr. was about $350 then. I had to put the wheels on and slid the tube together, two bolts and it was assembled. Rated at 2000lbs, I know I have moved more then that. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

DAP.

I have both the 1 ton and 2 ton Country Manufacturing Tandem Axle Trailers. Both were shipped on pallets by freight truck and required assembly (not difficult).

I started with the 1 ton version (back in 1983) to create the dump trailer for my lawn vac system. (See photo). The 2 ton is shown on the reply below.

I have modified the 1 ton unit very extensively by reinforcing the bed and frame, widening the tread width to gain stability on slopes, and adding my own hydraulic cylinder and bed pivots to get a much higher dump angle than the standard version has.

This unit has served me well as a lawn vac trailer, but I think you would want to go to the 2 ton version which is much beefier if you are going to be hauling dirt and rocks.

DAP,

Country Mfg 2 ton Tandem Axle Trailer. I installed a 24 inch stroke hydraulic cylinder. The mounting pivots were included as part of the standard trailer--all I did was to purchase a standard 24 inch stroke cylinder, hoses, and couplers. The jackstand is also included.

This is a much heavier duty unit than the 1 Ton Version.

Jack, just out of curiosity, do you find the tandem axel more stable or less stable on your slopes than a cart with wheels at each corner?

My lot has a couple really steep spots that I deal with and I have dumped over and twisted into pretzels a handful of the 16 cubic foot tractor carts that come from the hardware stores. I've been looking at larger ones but was never sure if I'd just end up rolling over a bigger more expensive cart.

Bob,

I don't try to go on steep sideslopes with my trailers or wagons. (Trailers have their axles "close together" or are only 1 axle whereas wagons have at least 2 axles widely separated. Trailers impose a significant vertical tongue load on the tractor drawbar, but wagons impose essentially no vertical load on the tractor.) As I mentioned in the previous post, I did widen the tread width on the 1 Ton tandem axle trailer to help stabilize it on sideslopes. With the original design it was on the verge of overturning on 20 degree sideslopes, but never actually did overturn. Note how tall it is. It holds 42 bushels of grass clippings so it is naturally going to be tippy when almost loaded. However, with the widenend stance it has been fine.

I don't think there is a clear case to be made that wagons are inherently more stable than trailers with respect to sideways overturning. For pure sideways tipping, the tip angle is approximately given by the Arctangent of the ratio of Half the Tread Width to the Height of the Center of Gravity. The wider the stance and / or the lower the CG, the higher the slope angle has to be to tip.
