Still Deciding
I am in the process of possibly buying a 1976 1070 with powershift this friday and I have no clue as to how to properly operate the PS. Could one of you Case gurus school me on the proper usage of this shifter. I have found some of the don't about them but still don't fully understand using it. I am curious on things like do you have to use the clutch to go from forward to reverse (I will always air on the caution side and use the clutch unless told otherwise) Do you have to clutch to change ranges etc.

Thanks for any help

John

Just sold my 1070 a month ago. Yes, you have to use the clutch to shift ranges (1-4) and between 1st power shift and reverse. You can push in the clutch and move from 1st to reverse without completely stopping. Do not leave it in reverse and run the PTO (like running a grain auger) because it will spin all the oil out of one of the planetaries and burn it up. Running a snowblower in reverse won't bother it, nor will backing up the round bailer and waiting for it to tie hurt it. Don't force a 2nd or 3rd to 1st downshift by suddenly pushing in the clutch. Down shift with the lever allowing a few seconds between the shifts. This can be done with the clutch pedal with a little practice also. It's
easier on the tractor to do the shifting at lower rpms also when you can. When these were new we used to downshift at full throttle when the going got tuff and then back up when conditions allowed, so they can take it, but it isn't
smooth shifting like newer power shifts are.

Thanks for the information. ANother question though. Is there anything I should pay extra attention to when I test this thing tomorrow?

Thanks again

One way to access the power shift clutch seals, is to have the tractor running, but the range shifter in neutral. Raise the 3-point hitch in each power shift gear. If it raises slower in any of the gears, that indicates a clutch seal is leaking. I believe there are 4 clutches.

Yesterdays tractors.com has a wealth of information on those tractors in the Case forums. Spend some time there and you can learn a lot.
