Case 580B Synchronizer Replacement

Just bought a 580b backhoe and was told it needs new synchronize gear to make it shift from forward to reverse. Previous owner told me he could always get reverse to go in with a little care. Then his neighbor borrowed the backhoe brought it back with no fuel or reverse working. So he decided he was done with the unit and put it up for sale. My question is do you have to split the tractor to get the old one out and new one in ? We pulled the shifter plate and fount that the fork for the shifter was broke. Had the weld shop weld it back up and reverse just grinds,If you hold it it will try to move as long as it is on level grade. Manual shift Shuttle
