Case 580D

Running fine when I shut it off half a year ago. It's been sitting since. Machine was a hard start when I bought it, usually, a little spurt of either got it going.

Fuel past filters

Fuel solonoid is getting power

Fuel spurts out of injector lines when cranking

Fuel in common rail

Glass bulb in check valve on pump seems to work

I'm not sure I'm getting enough pressure from the pump. If I put my finger over the end of the injector line it's just enough to push it off during turnover. But, that could just be the low volume of each pulse.

I can get the occasional cylinder to hit with either. But even when turning over, there's no smoke like I'd expect with a fuel, no fire, situation.

The starter seems very weak, even with a charged battery and linked to my truck.

Check the air filter and the air intake line to the manifold. Does the unit have glow plugs? Do they work? If the starter is too slow that can complicate starting, too.

I took the tube from the air filter to the manifold off, so the filter is not an issue.

No glow plugs, but a block heater. Had it plugged in for hours to the point where parts were hot enough to be hard to touch certain parts.

The starter may be the issue. But I wanted some second opinions on that. Older machine, so I'm sure the compression isn't great, so a faster spin may be enough? It's weak enough that either will stop it cold if it kicks off before the piston reaches it's peak. But that may be normal, I'm not very experienced with diesels.

The starter is VERY important to the system.. especially an engine that doesnt have glow plugs..
The starter HAS TO spin the engine fast enough to heat the cylinders to ignite the fuel..
and if the injectors arent atomizing the fuel & is coming out in streams of fuel, it wont start fast either.
AND its possible that the injection pumps "head & rotor" is worn to the point that its not pumping enough fuel to start the engine..
There are tests for these components..

Charge the battery, then have someone aim a hot air hair dryer into the intake tube while cranking it.

Hair dryer - Hmmm - That has potential.

Guess if it doesn't work then it's definitely a fuel problem.

You may increase compression a bit by squirting a little oil into each cylinder and cranking the engine over a little.

That thought had occurred to me, but any idea on how to get the oil in without removing injectors?

I could put a few teaspoons in the intake manifold? It would get somewhere, eventually, hopefully?

Check the wires from the battery and at the starter. Corrosion in the cables and at the terminals will drastically reduce amps to the starter. Clean all connection points up as good as you can get.
