Not sure if any of you are familiar with skid steer hydraulics but figured I would ask. I just bought a case 1996 1840 uni-loader the hydraulics do not work to run the bucket and lift. It does run and steer correct. It does have a high flow set up which I got working it will bog the motor down when engaged. I have changed the oil and filter. the holding tank and lines all get hot after running for awhile all lines except the ones going to the cylinders. It also has aux lines on one side then 2 bigger lines on the other side along with a smaller third line. Any ideals on what they are for?

Major parts to test are pump, valve block, and hoses. If you aren't puking oil check the oil level then look for leaks as it operates. Do the valves have cables to operate them? Can you see the valve moving when you move the stick? Try loosening the lift cylinder fittings. Will they squirt under pressure? There are lots of easy things left to test. I'm not a skidsteer guy but all hydraulic systems have fluid, tank, valve, actuator, and pump that you could test.

I have the same machine, the bucket/lift hydraulics will not operate unless the safety bar is down. Check the linkage for the bar. I will look in the manual and see if there is a trouble shooting guide.

The bar is released. I need a hand to see if the linkage moves at the control. I have a gauge coming and there is a tee on the outlet of the pump. Would anyone know what connections I would need to connect to it? The gauge is 1'2" npt. I also read that you should put the tank in a vacum to prevent oil from leaking out when disconnecting hoses, I have a vacum pump but cannot find the cap they make that has a hose connection on it.

The large line with the, single small line is for the high flow. Mine is just the standard flow with lines on the left, controlled by the pedal in the middle.

I just have an operators manual, not much help.

One important service is changing oil in the chain cases. They tend to get water in there, I drained 2 pans of milky fluid from mine, only calls for 6 qts of 10W30 for each side. My dealer said to change it annually.

eboyce ,

You could put the gage in the tee after the pump.

I believe the loader valve is under your front floor board, You could mount the gage in a tee at the IN port of the loader valve.

I have a Case 1845c and the maintenance manuals. Don't know how similar the two units are.

the loader valve on an 1840 is on the right hand side behind the seat, kinda down by the engine.

Yes really hard to get too I need two people just to see if the linkage moves. I really don't want to go there unless I have too.

You should be able to pull the seat out and see everything you need to see

All the linkage is under the seat the valve is behind the seat in the engine compartment. It is a ***** to get too especially with all the extra hoses.

Ha Ha ha, welcome to the world of working on skid loaders. If you think that's bad, there's a lot worse jobs on that machine. I've got one, and have had 3 of them.

Skidsteer is working now, Some one along the way cut the lines going into the loader valve and bypassed it to run the auxillary only! It has been that way for a long time cause the line that used to feed the aux from the laoder valve was under 2' of oil and dirt.

Problem is now I do have enough pressure to pick up a bucket load of dirt. I have hooked a gauge into the auxillary connection and when I engage the aux I only get 825 lbs. The pump is new I took it in and they said it worn pretty bad and it showed. Any thoughts adj the unloader relief setting? Not sure if it is adjustable.

If the pump is new, how can it be worn that much.

The pressure you obtained, is that when you fully extended or retracted the cyl?

The pressure developed by a cyl would be dictated by the type load.

Could be bad piston seals in the cyl.

Most loader valves are adjustable. Some use shims and others have a screw to adjust.

The pump is new the old one was worn. The pressure was taken at the auxiliary connection with just the gage connected.

You really need a flow meter and pressure test, where you put a load on the pump.

Open center hyd's only put out the pressure required to do the job. You basically have to dead end a circuit to see how much pressure is available.

So now the new pump is already bad burned up overheated. Any know where I can get a used one?

I fix elevators for a living and not claiming to know your fix but motor bogging down and oil heating up is a sure sign of valve not opening.1 of the replies said that the valves may open with cables I also own a 1840 and his reply sounds dead on.

You need to make sure you have the correct valve in the circuit.

In an ope center hyd system, the pump is pumping all the time the engine is running, and the flow passes through all valves if the lever is in neutral.

You can damage the motor with pollutants, but to burn one up with fluid in it, you would notice the sound and the smell and the color of the fluid.

Apparently, there is a blockage caused by a bad relief valve or bad hoses, or wrong valve type.

When you installed the new pump, did you check all the other hyd components?

Did you have correct flow through the valve, and did you do a pressure check .

Since you said someone cut some lines, you have to wonder if they even knew what they were doing.

You may have a lot of jury rigging in the machine now.

I would suggest a good workshop manual before you waste any more money.
