Just wondering if theres a major difference between a category 1 and a category 2 three point hitch. Will an implement for a category 1 work with a tractor that has a category 2?

Yes, BUT?. There are some important things to consider:

A] The HP rating of the Cat 1 device will be less than the power available to drive it from a Cat 2 PTO.
B] the attachment pins for Cat 1 are smaller than Cat 2 pins and you will need bushings to take up the slake.

Many aftermarket companies try to combine hitches so they can get a better return on their investment by making the attachments fit multiple size tractors and hitches!

There are many cat 1-2 as well as 2-3 and 3-4 hitched attachments and from time to time it does cause problems with the hitch arms being out at the cat -2 width when the hitch is equipped with pins for cat 1 and being installed on a cat 1 size tractor.

Many tractors will take two sizes some times with a simple bushing or by switching the lower links from one end to the other.

Found this information on the web somewhere. Maybe you can use it.

CAT 0 specs.
Top link pin dia = 5/8"
draw pin dia = 5/8"
lift arm spacing = 20"

Cat 1 specs.
Top link pin dia = 3/4"
draw pin dia = 7/8"
lift arm spcaing = 26"

Cat 2 specs.
Top link pin dia = 1"
Draw pin dia = 1 1/8"
lift arm spacing = 32"

Cat 3 specs.
Top link pin dia = 1 1/4"
draw pin dia = 1 7/16"
lift arm spacing = 38"

And you might be able to reverse the draft (lower) link pins on the implement to help with the spacing.

Most Cat 1 stuff with outside facing pins will fit on Cat 2 hitches. I never bother with bushings, just a pain. Works fine with the extra slop unless you're grading or something exact.

Almost all my stuff is Cat 1 and it goes on a cat 1/2 or a cat 2 hitch no problem. The only one that gives me trouble is my posthole digger, I can't get it on my 100 hp Cat 2 tractor.

Okay. I'm looking to put a 6' king kutter tiller (cat 1) on my JD 2440 (cat 2)

I can use Cat 1 on my Zetor 5011 (Agri-Power 5000) tractor which is Cat 1 and 2 both.

I read that your tractor is Cat 2:
TractorData.com John Deere 2440 tractor information

You can always buy Cat 2 to Cat 1 top links. I just wonder if your lift arms can be adjusted to accomodate the Cat 1 width. My feelings are that it can.

I've heard of other guys having the combination that i'm looking at. I'm not sure if they had to make any adjusments though.

You could very possibly tear the tiller up w/ that kind of HP on it. If it's a cat 1 implement, then it is designed for use on a lower HP cat 1 tractor like a compact. If you said 2440, you're @ 60 HP. 2240 @ 50. Still too much.

I wouldn't advise.
