CAT I

I am new to tractors, only had my JD2305 since December. I understand from my manual my tractor is a CAT I as far as the three point hitch, this I understand but, what does CAT I mean? I assume there are CAT II's and CAT III's? Can you folks give me a better understanding of this so when I go to buy attatchments I know something about what I am buying?

basically, the difference between the categories is the upper and lower link pin diameters and spacing.

The sites that Brian and Roy posted gave some of the specs. There are also specific distances between the two lower pins and the upper pin. Typically the smaller sizes (0, 1) are not adhered too very well by many manufactures. As you get in the larger sizes (2, 3, 3N), most manufactures adhered to sizes pretty well. The sizes are Cat. 0, 1, 2, 3 and 3 narrow.

I would like to add that there is another category that few have heard of, and that is, CAT 1N. It is identical to the standard CAT 1 except the lower pin spacing, shoulder to shoulder, is 20" instead of 26". The Kubota BX series will use this spacing much better than the standard CAT 1 as well as the New Holland TZ, the Massey Ferguson GC. and the John Deere 2305, 2210 etc., subcompacts can use the standard CAT 1 however I sell a ton of our Handi Hitches in the narrow version, CAT 1N, specifically for these sub-compacts. Even though all the major manufacturers advertise their subcompacts as CAT 1, you should phisically hold the lift arms 26" apart and look at your tire clearance. Depending on whether you are running ag tires or turf tires, if you don't keep the sway chains tight you could easily have your lift arms rubbing on the tires on some of these tractors. Hope this helps.
