When we moved here the barn had a mouse population larger than the town we live by. We increased our barn cats and got and kept things down mice, moles, chipmunks and squirrels. Our black lab joins the cats hunting a rodent in the field as a game. Our cats have a nice hay lined stall in the barn and fair well in the winter here. If the snow falling they stay in the barn, once I blow snow they come out and take advantage of newly plowed walks and driveway.
I enjoy cats because they are not as loyal as some dogs IMHO. Barn cats You have to earn their trust. Our cats will sit on a log you are cutting up and yes sometimes that friend can be a pain!
My neighbors are amazed that when I am walking the property the all the cats follow behind me.
The past year the cats have been taken out one by one. I live in an area with coyotes, and timber wolves moving into the area. Our dog is a wanderer and in a fenced pen at night. Our lab (non-alpha) use to bark at leaves falling, now he is rather silent so I do believe we have an wolf in the area now.
