time to move !
(not so)Grumpy I sure agree with you. Grew up on a 100+ acre farm with deep woods and there were no rules about using guns whatsoever. You knew where your neighbors were and you were really careful
not to aim in that direction. Now, the same area is a mix of upmarket suburbia and preserved farms. Almost impossible to earn a living in this area farming.
And take your tractor out on the street and try to drive to a neighbor's property? Well....those Land Rovers and BMW's get on my tail and seem incredibly irritated that I'm slowing them down.
Yes, it's time to move. Likely NC or very Southern VA. Have issues at home why I can't for now.

I have the hollowpoints....just can't use them. But I learned, like many of us, on a whole lot of 22 shorts and LR,
and I continue to target shoot when I can to keep my eye. Someday.

ok, found the solution in another thread on farm robots. Just might be awhile...

Default Re: We're becoming obsolete

Cat terminator!

this is funny to me because of another active thread on the problem with feral cats, millions of them, killing all the small wildlife, including birds, who most of us love to feed and enjoy.
We'll each have our own little 3cpo equipped with a variety of "tools" to discourage/eliminate the local feral cat population. If you own a cat, collar it/microchip it. Without the collar,
that cat would be fair game for 3cpo. Ok buddy, what did you bring home today?

In spite of an adjacent village, cats are not a problem here. I'll give credit to the coyotes for maintaining a balance. It's all about the food chain. If you mess up the top, you mess up the bottom.

The numbers did not include yours or your neighbor's free ranging cats. The cats they are talking about are completely feral. The stats for domestic cats owned and allowed to free range are drastically lower than the numbers suggested for feral cats. I tend to look at these numbers very suspiciously because I don't see bands of cats roaming the countryside reeking devastation on the bird and rodent populations. I wonder what the effect on bird populations of pesticides/insecticides and urban sprawl? How many birds per year are killed by automobiles and nests of ground fowl and rodents destroyed by people mowing? Oh! The horrors of a plowed field to all those tiny mice feeding on the left-overs of last years crops. Just think. All those birds killed and there's still birds pooping on my car. All those mice killed and they still make nests in the electrical wires of my tractor. If anybody has a spare feral cat, can you send them to me?

Agreed, but there are so many people that feed ferals and thus the problem compounds itself. There are organizations that will supply you with traps and spay/neuter for free. I have two what were once feral cats that do an amazing job controlling mice and snakes. Yes, they do hang around my wife痴 bird feeders for a little extra curricular activity as well. Got to take the good with the bad I guess.

If there is a problem with too many cats, the problem exists because of us. Spay and nueter your felines, no problem.

Good logic here.....we should apply it to people as well!:2cents:

Many of the out buildings on our family farm have a rectangular hole cut into the corner if their doors. This hole called a 'cat hole' is there so the cats can assist with rodent control.
I can't help but wonder if the people carrying on about cats, doing what cats were put on earth to do, are the same ones who advocate repopulating inhabited areas with wolves and mountain lions.

Western, what do you bait a cat with for the traps? Milk and catnip? Drew

When bears come down from the woods into suburbia, we trap them and haul them away.
Too many cats for that, but maybe something would help. Most of us do not have a 22 hollow point
as an option, living in a no-shoot area.

I use the cheapest canned cat food I can find, I also use a small trap (coon size) and limit the access areas to somewhat narrow. Works best when you know there is a cat frequenting the area, the longer it is out, the higher the odds you catch a "cat" with stripes:D Trap set up is important too, I try to put something around the trap (twigs branches whatever) to give them a feeling of security to enter, works with many critters.

As far as the "bear relocation", when I lived in Colorado, the mega rich up in the mountainous subdivisions, would complain and have "nuisance" bears caught and relocated, they (the tamer bears) became a problem for the rural folks. This wasn't a problem until the mega rich had bear hunting outlawed in their area.

Not to mention the little bugger that tunneled under our garage slab. Spike took care of him the first year he was with us. Gummed that chippy six ways to Sunday. Gummed him dead.
