FarmGeek - What is the rod on the side of your top link...some sort of guide?

Well my top link came in yesterday (it's blue...?) I placed the order on Tuesday so I was kind of shocked to see it here so soon. I just need to make up some lines (does anyone know the thread size off-hand?) and paint it so it doesn't look so goofy on my MF and I should be set to go I hope!

Yes, go with smaller hose to get control even if Cat2. I plan to change my hoses to 1/4 inch

It's a position indicator.

Ahh, excellent idea!

1/4" hoses are ideal on any hydraulic cylinder used for positional control where there is no need of quick movement. I'd also suggest an adjustable needle valve orifice or .030" orifice for even more control.

Use larger hoses for an FEL or hydraulic motor where you need quick action or high flow, but 1/4 is perfect for TnT.

Thanks M7040 and jinman for the recommendations on the hydraulic 1/4 inch hoses. I'm going to the hydraulic shop tomorrow to have the hoses made up after work. I have been busy playing with my 512 FEL I had installed Friday on the JD 5203. The dealer also installed a rear hyd remote for the hydraulic toplink while he had it at the shop. This will be my first tractor FEL and hyd toplink even though i have been on tractors for the last 41 years. I do have many hours of loader experiance on the big CAT frontend loaders we use at the mill, so it didn't take long to get the feel of using the loader. Thanks again for your help:D

I can see how the side link would be helpful, but what is the big attraction to the hydraulic top link? What are the primary uses? I usually set mine for my implement when attached and thats where it pretty much stays. What am I missing?

My biggest use is with a box scraper. If you want to temporarily dig a little deeper with the scarfiers, shorten the top link. Then, if you have a fixed rear blade on the box scraper, lengthen the top link to cut better in reverse. You can also tweak the top link while running to get the best angle for cutting.

Sometimes when bush hogging, if you want to back up over something and the 3ph doesn't lift the cutter far enough, shorten the top link.
