You are looking for 100K or less -- and a 600x400 image is large enough for anyone to view on the screen and requires less compression to reach 100K which gives a much better quality image.

FYI, your new camera has a 3:2 ratio (i.e 600x400, 1200x800, etc.), and not 4:3 (i.e. 640x480, 800x600, 1280x960, etc.), as many point-and-shoot camera's have.

If you plan on printing your images (and I don't mean with your color printer at home), use 300dpi as your guide. So, if you want to print 4x6's your looking for a filesize of 1200x1800; 5x7's -- 1500x2100, etc.

I use IRfanview and resize all my pics to 800 x 600 and reduce the quality to 50% to 95% depending on what will get me below the 100K limit.

I took my CD to Walmart this morning to get a set of prints made. All the files are the original jpeg, right out of the camera (large, fine). Is there a downside to printing from the larger filesize? Time was not a factor for me. Their machine read all the images from my CD in just a minute or so.

No downside -- you just have larger files that won't give you any better results. Did you order 4x6's? If you ordered different sized prints, and gave them the original files, then you are relying on THEM to crop them, which may be different that you would like.

I think Wal*Mart has online processing -- so you can just upload your images on the web without having to even step inside their store.

Yeah, one of my many computer-related challenges in this whole endeavor is my connection at home. Strictly dial-up which pushes my patience. One other thing I need to establish is a web-based photo album for family and friends to view. I'll have to work on image/file size to make that tolerable. Winter project as the tractor work subsides /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A bit off topic- but for transferring the photos from the camera- an inexpensive card reader (from WallyWorld for about $20) is much faster and easier than using the camera (and saves batteries as well).

The Walgreens on Bendix and Cleveland has a photo department as well. They've always been pretty decent and easier to get in and out of than the Walmart's. Same thing for Walgreens up on 933 and Darden.

We had some 8X10s done their for the kid's fair project and they were very nice. As Dave mentioned, though, they will crop it to fit 8X10 since that is not a proportional size that comes out of the camera. I like to crop them at home to fit the size I need, like 8X10, then take them to Walgreens for the printing. Then it's my fault if they are off center, not the lowly photo tech. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
