I am considering building something like this, maybe a little longer. I will be very interested to see your progress.

I built a British design of Kayak at 14' in length from 2 sheets of marine mahogany plywood. It looked wonderful in the book that I copied it from but it turned out to be very unstable because it is a V shaped hull.
I own several other canoes and kayaks.
A few years ago I taught myself to do a Kayak Roll and come back up, and this was done at just over 50's years of age.

That will be a fun project, and every time you use it you'll appreciate the work you put into it.

Nice project, while I was building my cab last year my son was building a 15 foot woodstrip canoe in the next bay. Fun to watch it come together.

He used the glue liberally so it would squirt out all over, all I could do to not go over and wipe it up with a wet rag. Son said you just leave it dry, wipe it up and it fills the pours of the wood. He was right, when all dry and done he just scraped the excess glue off.

He said one thing all the builders warn about is be sure to get the strong back and patterns straight and square with each other, said you can unscrew up everything but a crooked boat.

Now you know all I know. (-:

I used West Systems Epoxy when I build something similar a few years ago. Don't know just how well Tight Bond 3 will hold with the cedar being such an oily wood.

Yes the glue up is a mess. But the West System epoxy you can have up to an hour of working time to help get everything in place, where as Tight Bond 3 only gives you about 5 min. before things need to be clamped up right.

Best wishes for your success! I have always drooled over those beautiful canoes!

Lightweight is nice  I have a 32# kevlar canoe I bought for tripping in the BWCA. It's nice to portage a canoe that's lighter than the packs!

I built a few back in the 90's. Hardest part for me was the glassing. Esp the inside. Best part is when you have it out, and some one in an aluminum canoe says "nice canoe, did you build it yourself?" And you say "YES, I DID!".

What plan are you building?

Strip boat building can be rewarding and fun project if you have space in the shop for it. I am building an Adirondack guide boat and it takes up a bit of space for sure. 16? long so the strong back is a bit larger than that and then there is all of the cedar strips and other materials to manage. I went the staple method mainly because of the over-all size and the ability to press and clamp the 3/4 strips. When finished it will be in the 70 pound range.

I bought the materials at: Welcome to Newfound Woodworks Inc, Bristol, New Hampshire

A pretty good place to buy materials and they offer build up kits for many different boats.

Did you make your own strong back parts or purchase them? Have fun building and sanding and sanding and sealing then adding fiber.

I bought their dvd. It has helped me out a lot. I did make my own strong back. Its made out of 3 pieces that fit together. I am able to adjust it to different lenghts incase I decide to make another model later on. It took me a while to find a lumber yard that has clear cedar decking 14' Once spring gets here I will probably order the resin and cloth from Newfound.
