Funny thing about the GPS.... I don't usually need it. When I take trips, I look at maps and plan the route in my head. Then I go. What I like the GPS for is it tells you fun stuff, like how many miles till you get there. How much time left at your current driving rate. What time you'll get ther. Elevation changes in real time, etc.... I use it even going to places I've been a hundred times before!

What's also fun is to program in a route, then deviate from the route and watch it complain.

Or don't updated it and drive on new highways. I switch the vehicle icon to a red monster truck and drive through the farm fields.

The little voice says "Please return to X road" "Please return to X road"
The wife and I travel Ohio,Michigan,Indiana on a regular basis and have maps for each state.Old habits are hard to break I guess..

Last summer, using my phone, i was able to see a huge backup ahead. I got off before it, and went down a backroad next to the interstate that wasnt even on a paper map. Saved me well over an hour, was nice driving past all the parked cars.

I was a Boy Scout, and quite proud of my map reading ability and self awareness of where I am at all times. I poo-poo'd GPS for many years, until I actually saw one in action. Then it finally clicked in my very closed mind.... a GPS IS A MAP!!! A VERY GOOD MAP!!! DOH! I've been using it ever since.

Many times we'll be driving down the road using just the GPS and come up on a traffic jam. By then it's too late, we're usually stuck in it. So my wife fires up the map on the cell phone and we can at least see how long the backup stretches in front of us, and if there's a viable exit route ahead. If we'd just ditch the GPS and use the cell phone only, we'd see the backup coming way before we got stuck in it. I gotta make the leap!

Where the cell phone gps excels for me, is two tasks. First, find your hotel in the middle of a strange city at night. Second, find the best Mexican restaurant within 2 miles of the hotel. Easy as pie.

Well, at least if our society goes for a big crapolla, I don't have to worry. the Cityits will never find their way out of the city. Heck, they won't even know which way North is.

We use RAM mounts - they are not the cheapest but work very well and used in a lot of off road applications due to their ability to hold on to your gear in the rough.

Since Oct. it's illegal to hold or use a phone in a moving vehicle (for the driver, of course)in Oregon, so some kind of jimmy-rigged 'mount' has to be used. It's quite likely that you could be ticketed for just having it in the seat or cupholder and not using it if you caught a peeler on a bad day.

That won't stick in court. And cops are the worse abusers of driving with a phone stuck to the side of their head.

Apparently our distraction law fines just doubled to a thousand bucks!

Funny, a cop once told me they can't ticket for follow too close, because they can't prove it. So I wonder how the distracted driving thing works?

In most states you will find the law enforcement is exempted from the hand held device laws, as it was explained to me it was because they are such highly trained drivers they can do so safely while us peons can't walk and talk at the same time much less drive and that was said with a straight face.
