Cetane numbers?

The chemicals used in PowerService and many other diesel additives are well documented as cetane boosters. I can tell a very noticeable difference in both how well my 7.3 PSD runs and starts when I use the "hogwash"
Somes times a clean hog is ok.

From what I have learned reading, cetane boosters might work. It depends on what is added at the refinery. It seems like if the refinery adds a certain chemical to boost the cetane, adding more of the same chemical won't work. There is really no way to know if the boaster helps or not. I kind of agree, the additives you use are questionable, except I do believe they help with the gelling in the winter.

I'm running bio-diesel, somewhere between 5 and 20% and from what I have read, that takes care of the lubricity issue also.

Bio-Diesel IS a great fuel stock, high in natural Cetane, detergant and lubrication qualities are excellant. The BIG problems are quality control and moisture absorption. With good national standards and POS (that's point of sale :) ) filtration, these are very managable concerns.

There rellay isn't any lubricity concern with LSD or ULSD used in modern diesels and a very minimal concern even on OLD diesels with Bosch or Bosch licensed pumps. Now the Sleeve metering, DD rack and Cummins PT systems, that's another story...... a l o n g story.

Here's a thread on the TDI forum.

Note a lot of sellers list it as 40, because it's at least that.

I was talking to the feul service guy for my local Southern States fuel supplier and he told me that Southern States Super Gold Premium, cetane is now 52. Now I can stop adding cetane to the fuel for ny Deutz Fahr which needs a min. of 46.

No premium diesel fuel offered close to me. I've been using Motorcraft Cetane improver for several tanks of fuel now to see if I can tell a difference in mileage. I really can't see any improvement in mileage or performance. The 6.4 Powerstroke in my F-450 pickup runs so smooth I can't tell any difference in sound. I decided to try a cetane improver since my mileage went down over the winter, possibly from winter blended fuels.

The newer Powerstrokes are a lot quieter than my old 96 with single shot injectors. I can hear a big difference in mine with an additive. I've been listening to it for 186,000 miles so I'm pretty tuned in. The older Powerstrokes have a unique idle that wanders a little in sound, kind of an imtermittent change in the rattle...it goes away in mine with a good dose. I mostly use PowerService but I've used Redline and Stanadyne also in the past.
