I bought a new tiller - Frontier RT1260 - new but from 2004. I am a little unsure how much gear oil to use. First off the top section has a dipstick with no markings other than a small hole at the top - do I fill to that hole? Also there is a drain plg by the chain. Do I open that and pour oil in till it comes out the drain plug or what? Anyone have some advice on how to oil a tiller correctly. If not I will call the dealer next week. This is my first piece of PTO powered equipment. Thanks for any advice.

I am by far not an expert. I have a Land Pride 50" tiller that is chain drive. It has a hole toward the bottom. but not on the bottom. it is the level. the important thing with a chain drive is to have a oil bath that the chain will pass through as it go's around.

New tiller, no manual?
There are probably a couple of places where you need to check the levels. At the chain, and on the side transmission there should be a vented plug. Turn that out and check to see if oil is on the end of the stick. Oil up to the lower screw on the chain side as you said.

Yours may be different, but this is how mine is done.

There are also probably grease zerks on several locations that should be greased about every 8 hours of use. This would include the zerks on the PTO shaft ends.

I did get a manual and parts manual actually for it. Instructions were just a bit unclear. Thanks for clearing them up for me John!

You're welcome. My manual was not very good either, with just some pictures and a few words that didn't really explain it, but I'd had enough experience with other similar equipment to know.

I did the grease up today as well. Went ahead and greased up the 300X loader and front end of the 3320 as well. Thanks for the advice!

Well, since you did all of that, why not grease the zerks on the tractor too? You probably have them on the brake rods, clutch rod, front axles, pivot point in the center of the front axle etc.
I've read many tractor owner's manuals, and at best they usually don't site every zerk, so sometimes you need to look all around for them. Some hide very well.
If you have any zerks on something that has a rubber looking grease cup, be careful not to add much to it as you can blow out the grease cup. Usually just one squirt will probably do.
On anything without a cup, you can usually do fine with 3, but it's fine to push out all the grease in the bushings once-in-a-while to make sure you don't have sandy, dirty old grease in them.

Kioti recommends I do my tractor zerks every 50 hours, but I do them between 20-30 hours and the more exposed ones more often than that.

Grease is cheap, equipment isn't.
Keep up the good work.
