Hi Harv,

There is another thread going about the guys "making" their own chain guards and I only mentioned this as an alternative... and yes they will probably have to modify the Howse bracket to their particular cutter... but still much easier than starting from scratch... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Actually, John, now that I look at my own picture, the front guard is a completely straight bracket 5' long (the width of my cutter). I think you're right -- that would be pretty easy to modify to fit pretty much any cutter.

Thanks for the pix of your Howse chain guards. I would have to make some modifications to make it fit the KK. On the front of the KK, it is open to the top of the deck. There is no metal across the front to bolt the angle iron to. Adding another piece of angle iron along top edge could provide the mounting surface. The back will be a lttle more interesting. Could you provide the demensions between the bends on the back piece? Is that 2" angle iron or larger?

Thanks for suggesting Howse chain guards. Depending on how much modification I figure needs to be done, it might be the way to go. Maybe its the added mounting hardware of the KK that makes its more expensive.

Well, John, it'll be at least a week before I get back up to the property where my tractor stuff is, but I'll be glad to take measurements and better picts when I get there.

The angle iron is hefty, and I think is about 2". All I know is, they were dang heavy when I picked them up at the dealer.

hmmm ... I like that!. Threaded rod ... weld or bolt 2 end brackets and one center bracket ... nut, chain, nut, chain, nut, chain ....

Hi all. This is my first post here, but I've been reading for awhile now.

I picked up a 5' KK brush hog yesterday, and like most didn't want to fork over $300 for chain guards. So my wife and I built some today. The rear's finished, tomorrow we start on the front. Total cost is about $100, mainly 85' of chain, about 12 lbs of bolts/nuts/washers to hold it on, and 2 pieces of pre-punched angle iron (hopefully it will hold up). I'll attach a couple of pictures.. Just bolted the angle iron on to the bottom side of the deck, sticking upwards, and bolted on lengths of chain to that. Only took about an hour to make the rear one.

Hope it's helpful or inspirational.. They aren't pretty, but neither is the brush hog.

Thats the best paint job I've seen on a KK implement yet. Maybe KK's paint department is finally getting their act together.

By the way great job on the chain guard. Enjoy your new toy, I mean tool.

The only potential problem I can see is down the road with all the inherent vibration from the rotary cutter... all those fasteners/nuts and bolts will become a nightmare to keep constantly tightened... /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

...otherwise... you'll be losing chain pieces here and there... maybe you can try using a metal rod and loop through all the top links... and secure into slots or every ~say 5 links bolt it to keep your spacing for your chain curtain...
