Your points are well taken. A lot has to do with the tractor operator and how the hooks are used. In my case I would never use either outside hook alone with a heavy load. The outside hooks only get used with a balanced load (chain on each side) where I want some stability to keep the load from swinging around or I want to be sure to keep the load somewhat level. While most folks attach their outside hooks to the outside edge, it can be a problem if abused.
As to the center hook, again, if abused it could possibly "pucker" the bucket, but I have no intention of using the hooks to yank on things. They are strictly a lift point for me, and as such I think the strength is sufficient. Regardless of how you could attach a chain to a FEL bucket it should never be used to "yank" things... that is a sure way to mess up your bucket and/or loader arms.

Not sure which bucket you have, but the top lip of my bucket could not be moved with a cresent wrench (unless it was a 24" wrench with a 4' cheater bar on it!). I also didn't want to put angle all the way across because I have a pallet fork attachment that hooks under the lip on each side about where the loader arms attach. By the way, I have also used the forks to pick up to the max capacity of the hydraulics, and have never bent the lip.
