Chain oil

/ Chain oil #21
Back in about 2010 or 2012 Baileys had a "by the case" sale of their bar oil. It was inexpensive ($6?) and good. I bought 8 gallons. I've still a few left.

BUT the name of the product is "Motion Lotion" and I faced some questions when wifey saw the bill and the name.

good thing the jugs had the name on them:laughing:

Motor oil or any kind of oil will certainly work in a pinch. I tried it in the fall and it sprayed all over my pants and boots and totally oiled the s--t out of my clutch to the point it would smoke like He-l and slip. Total cake of sawdust packed in everywhere. No more motor oil for me. not worth the clean up.

Back in the day they all used motor oil B4 special chain oil was available.
I remember using SAE 30 in the old Cobra saw.
That Cobra was essentially a Clinton lawn mower engine pulling a saw chain, but better than a buck saw. LOL

But back then did the chains rev as high as now? Sure seems to me the old saws were much slower where the oil might stay on the bar?

Back in the day, I mixed STP oil treatment into motor oil, for bar oil...

Quite right as those old early 2 strokes never reved all that much, they also drove a rather hefty chain in relation to the power.
When U think of it some older smaller saws really used a simple lawn mower engine like the Clinton 2 stroke.
Heck even the carbs were simply adaptations.

Most Clinton 2-strokes weren't hi rev engines. Many were configured as like-for-like swap in replacements for a B&S.

I had one set up as a gold dredge floating water pump. It looked like a lawnmower on an innertube. It was tagged as Chrysler Industrial Engine (3 to 5 horsepower, I don't remember). I had the throttle wired wide open with a load that held it about 3500 rpm except if it sucked air it would float the 'valves' (reeds) somewhere above 4,000 rpm. Since we had to backpack the dredge in, the light weight of this 2-stroke was a real advantage. I can see how it would be suitable for an early chainsaw. Well if you didn't mind losing your hearing.

As others have said, mix it 50/50 with bar oil. Especially if you're in a cold climate, the thinner viscosity helps.

I was once tempted to use gear oil on a chain saw until I found I still had some bar oil. But, I considered it as I was far from town and needed my chain saw. Anyway, would that have worked for a one time use - understanding it would not likely have the properties to stick to the bar as regular bar oil would. I now make sure I always have a decent amount of bar oil on hand.

The point is to keep it lubed so it doesn't burn up. If the gear oil is a low enough weight to flow through the saw and dispense properly it will probably do the job, just won't stick.
A lot of CSM is done with vegetable oil dripped out on the end of the bar using an auxillary oiler.

What's CSM?

My little Ryobi cordless chainsaw's oiler is hopeless. I use a squeeze bottle (had mustard) to oil with.

CSM = Chain Saw Mill

My little B&D cordless chainsaw goes thru oil quickly. My Stihl 660's were so stingy with oil I swapped out the oilers for HO oilers.
