   / Chain #12
I finally made it to Lowes and Home Depot last week to buy some more chain. Thankfully the two stores are within walking distance of each other since I was walking back and forth pricing their chain.

Lowes was cheaper, $30 to $35 for the 5/16 4,700# capacity towing chain. The buy the foot chain was cheaper at Lowes as well.

I used my JD 3/8 inch chain and the 5/16 Lowes towing chain to pull a 36inch oak stump out of its hole on Friday. I had dug the stump out so don't think I was yanking the beast out of the ground with the chain and tractor! The chain did fine.

The root ball on this particular stump was really large for some reason, 5-6 feet. It was really tough to just get it pulled from the hole. I was having to pull backwards and I don't think the R1s get as good traction going aft instead of forward. The ground was also wet which may or may not have had anything to do with it.

I pulled the stump a couple of times and nothing moved but my tires. But the chain was fine. I'm not sure I can break these chains with the type of work I'm doing. I hope!

Hope this helps...
