Chainsaw Bar Oil ??

How much bar oil are you guys using? I cut a lot of wood. Personally I cut 6-8 truck loads per year, my neighbor who I help a lot cuts 15 or so truck loads, and I have helped my Father-N-Law and I can not think of a season where I have went through more than 2 gallons. I get it at Menards for $5 per gallon on sale.

We ran out once on a Sunday and 20 minutes from town. We took a qt of 80W90 gear oil and mixed it with a qt of 30 wt motor oil. Not sure how well it worked but the gear oil made it much stickier.

Its just too cheap to not buy the right oil for the job so use bar oil.

I use recycled hydraulic fluid in all eight of my chainsaws.

Stopped at my neighbors and told him I was heading in to buy some parts and also needed bar oil for the chainsaw ... he stated "Thought you just dumped the oil in those tractors and the truck? Use it ... I use nothing but used motor oil in all of my chainsaws and have for years"

What about that?

I paid a little over $400 for my stihl chainsaw 6 years ago. I think i will use $7/gallon bar and chain oil from walmart at the least. Im not going to worry about the cost of it. Even if it was twice that, i wont pay stihl for their oil at that price though, but like i said even at twice that price and i will buy the bar oil, i only use a gallon every 18 months to a year so i dont use that much.

I have used motor oil,auto trans oil in my stilh only when I was desperate for bar oil. I can buy a gallon of Stilh bar oil at local John Deere Dealer for $9.95. Really prefer official bar oil. Smokes less,keeps chain cooler, healthy for environment and healthy for me,cause I have to breath that smoke if the wind is coming from the wrong direction.

I think your talking about the 2 stroke oil to mix were talking bar oil, it should not smoke and cause you to breathe the fumes unless its hitting your muffler?

Change bar oil????????

My old poulan uses exactly two tanks of gas to one of bar oil. Pretty easy to keep both filled.

The guy means that if you change the oil in yoiur truck often enough it should be clean and that how can bar oil be any better

I use bar oil. but I think used motor oil should be fine, if not used up. But the guy that put gear oil in his, wow I couldn't stand to smell that for a whole tank of fuel.

I cut a lot of wood and I set my oilers on my 4 Stihls so that they use 1/2 tank of oil per tank of gas. I have no reason why but my bars and chains last very well. I buy real bar oil of several brands for 5-7 bucks a gallon. It is 3x thicker than used motor oil. Bottom line is it's what you think of your equipment and how painfull to the pocket book it is for you to replace parts. If you like $15 oil, Buy it. If you are ok with used motor oil Use it. :thumbsup:

I ran out of bar oil this year and had a few more logs to cut up. I used the gear oil that I drained out of my outboards for the last few tank fulls. Seemed to work ok and flowed out at almost the same rate as bar oil (did put it by the stove to warm up) to finish up but will get more bar oil next time in town as it is not that expensive and have seen bars wear out from used motor oil.
