There is a Pfanner Protos Integral Forestry Helmet as well. I've never worn one, but a logger friend of mine absolutely loves his.

Well since you mention that your friend is liking that helmet, I had to go check into it more, now can see why, it sure does looke like a nice helmet and I like how those earmuffs click out and in, that's what my $40.00 helmet didn't do, it clicked out but not in, now it's clicked in to stay.

So if those helmets came with a neck guard I'd would seriously be tempted to buy one but the way it is I can see and feel a lot of debris going down my neck and I guess the visor does flip up, didn't show that on Baileys site, poor salesmanship right there, if there going to sell something at humongous price atleast put some pictures up.

I wonder how many here warring this helmet...........................
Pfanner Protos Integral Arborist Helmet

That is a climbing helmet, big difference cutting in a tree compared to cutting on the ground. Up in a tree you need something slim and tight to your head, otherwise it would get hung up on branches or bang against the trunk.

I said yikes to, but just think how cool and professional you'll look cutting wood, all the wild life and your friends would go wow....... My friends would go wow to but say how crazy I was for paying that much, and then with no neck guard and it doesn't look like the visor flips up either, I gotta have that.

FYI, the face shield does flip up.

My logger friend was challenged by a dealer friend of his to try one for a day, and could return it if he didn't agree it was worth it. He still owns the helmet, and says he'd buy another one when it's time to replace this one.

Since I don't really care about the appearance, that factor would not really influence my decision either for or against it. I'd have a hard time forking over $280 for the Forestry version (I don't have a need for the arborist/climbers version). However, I guess for a guy who works with it 40+ hours per week, it was worth it to him.

I did take a chance on the Husqvarna Technical Forest Helmet (lists at $130) a couple of years ago. It was time to replace my old Husqvarna Pro Forest Helmet (sold for about $50 back when I bought it, similar to their current "Functional Forest Helmet" which sells for $55-$65 depending on the size adjustment system). I found it to be a significant improvement in comfort, and for some reason it does not aggravate an old neck injury as much as other helmets I've worn. One less trip to the chiropractor paid for the difference in price.

I did have a problem with an ear muff coming detached when I first bought it. I was able to pop it back on, but It would not stay well - often popping off when I lifted the muff off my ear. My dealer got me a new muff under warranty with no hassles. When the other muff came off about 3 or 4 months out of warranty, I emailed Husqvarna, explained my history and sent them pictures of the helmet (which still looked in new condition). They said they'd review my email. I thought that was the end of it until a complete new helmet showed up in the mail. I've not had any problems with the muffs on the new one.

That helmet is a little on the high side but it might be a better one then what I bought although I dont recall getting sawdust threw my shield. I seem to be warring glasses more and more anyways so I'm sure it helps and doesn't take much of a limb to make a wake up call.

yeah, I think it may have been on sale when I bought it - though I figured the UV exposure/degradation indicator was probably worth the extra expense since I'll probably use it less frequently than expected and probably won't change it out until the condition of the helmet warrants it (rather than discarding it at a set date or estimated UV degradation).

The few times I've had things come through the mesh were times I was closer to being working directly under the branch/limb I was cutting than I probably should have been (e.g. the branch/limb would be dropping within a foot +/-6 inches of my steel-covered toes - or being caught on the way down) ..... so just about every little particle/shaving was falling towards my upturned face.

I'd think having something that would protect from side impacts and not be easily knocked off would also be a major concern when working in a tree.

Not something I do, but I could easily see wanting/needing additional protection when there's no where/way to even try getting out of the way of falling/swinging objects. ....and having to either adjust the helmet or descend to retrieve it from the ground also would seem like nuisance when up in a tree.

Which is why good climbing helmets have a chin strap.

//Why they cannot just stamp the date in simple MM/DD/YEAR I do not know.
The date stamp is an insert in the injection mold. The format they use may not be particularly clear, but makes it easy to change or replace the insert every day/month/year.
