I work on the ten-ten rule. It's quite simple I'm going into the woods in the morning with ten fingers and ten toes and at the end of the day I'm coming out with the same.

But like you say be aware, more aware and super hyper aware of your surroundings at all times. Also what the saw is doing at any given second. No daydreaming!

This discussion brought back bad memories. A couple of years ago I almost cut off several toes. Lucky I just nicked them, but enough to bleed. After that I got fully outfitted and always use the equipment. I had cut wood for years without any or very little protection. AGE HOPEFULLY BRINGS WISENESS!!!!!!!

WELL said! Worst scare I ever had.. was after 38 hours of sawing on a fire (initial attack) and had forgotten bout the widowmaker that was part burned thru at the butt..

Turns out, it was 'put out' by the hand crew guys, but they only made certain the TOP of the log was out.. the bottom burned, fell, just as I was returning to the very place, and caused the whole hung up widowmaker to rotate out of the tree it was hung in.

Took my hard hat off, flung it a country mile, and broke my chainsaw, branch pinned it to the ground. I got lucky, beyond belief... the branchs formed a cage... and I just happened to be in the right place, by about 18 inches.

Ok, no more war stories from me.. LOL

For those who expressed interest in "upgrading" their safety equipment, I just received an email from Gempler's which offers a 10% discount on ALL on-line/phone purchases. Web site is www.gemplers.com

From the email -

"We've redesigned our Web site to make it even easier for you to shop. But you don't have to take our word for it. Check it out for yourself. And, just for visiting you'll receive 10% off everything on the site. (Note: The 10% discount will be applied at the end of your order.)"

Makes those chaps and head/ear/face protection just a little bit easier to buy.

I have a Stihl FarmBoss which I have not used recently. But I did wear the hardhat/face screen and earmuff combo that Stihl sells. As I see more use in the immediate future, I plan to purchase at least the chaps and Kevlar gloves.

I also wear the combo when I use the Stihl brush cutter. The face screen keeps my glasses from having all the little green bits stuck to them.

I always use the hardhat, faceshield, ear protection combo, plus leather gloves. Chaps and steel toe shoes will be my next purchase. Frankly, each time I finish a job and put the chainsaw away, I look up and say thanks that I am unharmed.

eyewear and hearing protection are a must. I personally don't wear chaps.
