Chainsaw users---tell the truth.....

no chaps but leather gloves, hardhat with ear muffs, face shield most of time. I go through about 2 gallons of gas in the saw a year. Use about 10 gallons in weed whacker a year always have hardhat on plus safety glasses and long pants.

Wear helmet with face shield and ear protection when ever using chain saw and brush trimmer. Haven't sprung for the chaps, but seriously considering.

I use the hardhat/muff/face shield combo all the time. Also wear leather gloves. About half the time I wear sunglasses as well.

I have never owned a pair of chaps, but used a pair once during a summer job that consisted of about a month tree culling. In that time I had two accidents. One kickback that resulted in a small cut on my chin (scar to this day which could have been prevented with the face shield) and another where I laid the saw bar on the chaps before it was done running. Stopped instantly, but messed up the chaps. Leg was untouched.

Also, a few years ago I was cutting wood for spare cash (bad idea) and a limb fell on me. Busted some teeth and got a mild concussion, along with some stitches. Could have been prevented with a hard hat.

Too many close calls for me. Coincidentally, this morning I ordered some chaps from:

I think that everyone would agree that a pair of legs is worth that.

After researching chain saw accidents, I spent more on the safety equipment than on the saw. Even bought some Kevlar chain saw boots after seeing stats on injury locations -- people often saw into the boot. Average accident costs in the neighborhood of $5000 with LOTS of stitches. I calculated that prevention measures were well worth the expense. I think Stihl makes some good boots. Several manufacturers sell the chaps. I learned that chaps that wrap around the calf are safer -- the saw in an instant can "climb" around the leg.

I've never worn any of those things. I'm not saying that's what you should do. I don't remember any of my family ever wearing any either. I know it's a good idea just like wearing helmets when you ride horses but never done that either.

Absolutely every single time I fire up the Husky I have full safety gear donned. Having seen too many maimed survivors, no way I want to become one of them.

Ranchman -- You said a mouthful! Chainsaw injuries are as ugly as any combat wound and just as lasting. One look at mangled bone, muscle and tendon was enough of a wakeup call for me!
