Changing hydraulic fluids - HUGE drain pans?

/ Changing hydraulic fluids - HUGE drain pans? #22
I changed hydraulic fluid and filter on my tractor . Clearance was a little tight , so I bought one of thos storage tubs , filled it with water , ( the amount of oil capacity I needed , marked level , cut it down and drained it . Also , I did like a previous post and drained what would come out at filter first . In doing that I did not really need pan for full capacity ...

engin oil capacity on my Hesston 100 - 90 is 3 gallons. I use a 5 gallon pail.

Hydro oil capacity uses two pails and they are near full. This is a gear tractor and I change out the oil filter regular like, so I only change out the hydro oil maybe every 1000 hours. Running it in the summer, cutting the orchard boils off any water........ I know, heresy.

Se le vie.

I did this ONCE. My tractor holds about 17 gallons. I used a series of really heavy duty trash bags, set into pails that were not under the tractor. Hold bag on drain and oil flows into bag in pail. When full, switch out. Everything was lined up ready to go when I pulled the plug.

Then I was left with 17 gallons of old oil to discard. Although there really wasn't much spilled on the floor.

When the tractor was due again for this service I sent it to the dealership.

For the OP... 2ea 5gal buckets from Home Depot, 1 drill pump and some hose = fast and done.
(then use a small drip pan to get what the pump didn't)

Use a bunch of 5 gallon buckets on cardboard here.

...now what to do with it? Must have 400 -500 gallons of various used oils in 55 gallon drums taking up space in a shed...

I dump mine in 5 gallon drums and back to the auto parts stores. They got to take up to 5 gallons at a time. PIA

Find someone with a waste oil heater (local repair garage or car dealership) they'll take it for free.....

If I was closer I'd take it, I typically burn 2000 to 2500 gal a year...usually running out in late Feb or March

Beware though you can't move anymore than 110 gals over the road without the proper permits....
