Oil & Fuel Changing TC24d Fuel Filter

   / Changing TC24d Fuel Filter #11
Don't know what a tooth spanner is -- is it something like the attached swimming pool filter wrench? If so, there is no room to get anything horizontal around the filter. The jawed vice grips I used had to come up from below the FEL mounting arm at a 45 degree up angle, catch a couple of the teeth on the fuel filter (not 180 across from each other), and turn only about 1/4" at a time until it was loose enough to turn by hand.

I'm too busy with remodeling and improvement projects right now to spend any time improving the tractor, but one of these days, Real Soon Now, I'll take a look at re-locating the fuel filter to a more accessible position. It's mounted on a sheet metal bracket that could be mounted anywhere. Does anyone know if there are any problems with the filter being mounted lower than the injectors?

No, it looks like this (see attachment).

Good idea about moving the location of the filter. When you do would you pls post a blurb about what you did and how?

I took some pictures. The first one is a little hard to see because of shadows. The space between the loader frame and the filter is about 3".

The second shows the view from the outside -- if you had X-ray vision, you could see tbe filter behind the loader frame. The loader frame is the part that stays on the tractor, even after the loader is removed.

The last one shows the view from below the loader frame -- the filter bowl is visible, but not the nut. The oil filter is also in the way, along with the labeled parts.

Don:

I see in the one picture that your reserve coolant tank is low. Do you have a leak? The reason I ask, I have a 24D and I smell coolant when I operate the tractor. I've never found a leak and there have never been any spots on the floor. The cap is tight, so unless the seal on the cap is bad, I'm not losing anything through the cap.

Haven't spent a lot of time looking for the leak but the smell of coolant has to be coming from somewhere.

Huh -- you're right -- it is low. Maybe I ought to check. No leak that I know of, and it never runs hot -- a little warm, a couple of times, when the radiator screen was clogged -- but, maybe I should take pictures more often -- I don't think I've ever looked at it in 340 hours. Could be that's whay it's low -- it would evaporate that much, here in Florida, in 13 months. Or, maybe I lost a little when the tractor was upside down in the hole. All I remember seeing, when I was sitting in the bottom of the hole under the tractor, was some red diesel fuel and a bunch of hydraulic fluid. But, maybe some green stuff got out, too. I'll add a little water tomorrow, and keep an eye on it. I don't have to worry about diluting the antifreeze, as long as there's enough in it to keep the system lubricated.

Thanks for noticing...

Check around the coolant drain fitting on the side of the block. Our NH's are notorious for leaking there.

I found that the fuel filters come from the factory tightened so much so that I needed help from a hammer and a blunt chisel to get the locking ring lose the first time on my TC-40D. I never need to tighten it more than I can twist it with my hands after cleaning or replacing the fuel filter. There is an o-ring that will make the seal without the use of a wrench.

I'm also thankful mine is protected behind the loader mount as a friend of mine had major damage done to his Massey from a fire when something hit and broke his glass filter bowl. Ouch! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I use channel locks on my TC21Dwith FEL . I have to remove the side panel of course. I have tried the rubber strap wrench, but found the channel locks easyier. The strap stretches to much and I got tired of working it on in just the right angle. A spanner wrench would probable be a good one thanks for the idea.....
