Replaced the alternator, still doesn't charge the battery. How do I identify and buy the correct regulator? It has a 4 cylinder Perkins diesel.

The more information imho the better. Make, model, (year if known), information on alternator, etc.

The VR on mine was located inside the hood under the tach. And iirc it had a 4 wire plug going into it. Now this was years ago but when I had my alternator rebuilt it wouldnt charge until I unplugged the VR. The alternator shop had built a self exciting/regulating one for it and forgot to tell me.

Unplug your regulator and just see if it works. Wont hurt to try.

Massey Ferguson Industrial 31, 1973 or there abouts. The regulator has 4 wires, the alternator is new not rebuilt and has 3 wires. Battery, ground, and field. I think the current regulator is from a Ford car and since this is a diesel I don't think it will work. It has a 4 cylinder Perkins engine, the plate on the engine is unreadable but it starts with A4 xxxx. Trying to identify the engine I am guessing it is a phaser/1004 series. Am I right in assuming Diesel regulators and gasoline engine regulators are not inter-changable?

Db Electrical shows this as the alternator which looks like a Delco to me except with a smaller pulley (it spins faster on low rpm motor). I'd just use a Delco one wire alternator putting a small pulley on it. They're available everywhere, simple, cheap.

This particular tractor has a cable driven off the back side of the alternator to drive the tachometer so I am stuck with an external regulator. A car regulator fits the wiring harness but I am unsure if since it is a diesel if it will work.

Electricity shouldn't care diesel or gas.
Just needs to be able to handle the alternator input and be able to handle to load.

You can obtain an electronic tachometer for reasonable $'s and probably most likely still ahead using that 3 wire alternator you now have vs rebuilding/replacing that cable driven one.
