Re: Cheap $20 a month Stand Alone Unlimited Rural Internet through AT&T Wireless

I suspect most here are like me and are looking at this from the anticipated cost savings in addition to the good connection. That said, I can't justify buying each variety of OBDll connectors, especially for two units. I did buy 1 12vdc and 1 USB.

Why would you need "each variety of OBDII connectors"? You just need one thing to power it indoors. Either USB-->OBDII, where you source the USB from a wall charger or another device (router, computer) or the AC-->OBDII power supply. Either one is fine and either one can be taken with the Mobley to another location. In the car while mobile you just hook it directly to the vehicle's OBDII port.

Or maybe I'm not understanding something?

No. That would be a wifi extender (or repeater). Those intercept the wi-fi signal of a source (like the Mobley or any other wifi router) and send it on further down the line.

The concept of USB tethering is just like hooking a cable modem or DSL modem to a router. The router sees the Mobley coming in as a WAN source and acts as the router to send it out via LAN ports and wifi. You'll end up with two actual wifi networks broadcasting - the Mobley itself and the external router. You can use either of them, but the external router will be more powerful and allow way more connected clients. The TM-AC1900, like pretty much any normal modern wifi router, allows basically unlimited number of clients to connect to. I'm sure there is some limit but it's in the many dozens or hundreds or higher.

Thanks Rob, i think i get it, although it doesn't matter to me what the difference is between an extender and router, but it sounds like a security issue which i'm sure is good to have with the router.
i have contacted a seller to see if the units are new or used or refurb...
i read that the Tmobile version has different firmware than the standard router,, that shouldn't be an issue with me just running the mobley thru it, would it?

So why not the Audiovox device they sell since the Mobley seems to be extinct?

No problem

Be sure to let us know if you receive it. While I did see that posted haven't seen any post they actually received one from them.

I will post back with an update. I will keep internet searching in the mean time, just in case.

For anyone interested, I did see Best Buy in Columbus, GA is supposed to get a couple in, but, they won't ship....5-1/2 hour drive from me....

Now I have modified the USB connector to accept either the 120adapter or a 12 vdc cig adapter.
Used these:

inShareplus 5 Pack 5.5 X 2.1mm Barrel Power Plug 12V DC Cable Connector Male Female with Pigtail for CCTV Security Camera LED Strip - - Amazon.com

Amazon.com : BV-Tech DC12V 1A UL-Listed Switching Power Supply Adapter for CCTV - 5 Pack - Black : Power Converters : Camera & Photo

And made a 2nd USB with:
Amazon.com: KUNCAN Dc 5v to Dc 12v Converter Step Up Voltage Converter 5ft Am to Dc 5.5 x 2.1mm: Electronics

View attachment 508440

A bit of versatility, just 2 little solder points.
I have the cig adapter left over from something, don't remember what.

NOTE to self - plug in only ONE power source at a time!!!!
Smart, may have to do something like that if I decide to make mine more portable in the future.

My friend who has a mobley she just got one of these ordered yesterday and was telling me about it. Its basically what you are doing.

Its not a hotspot, its only for vehicle status and location tracking, it would be good to track your employee or company cars, stuff the mobley can't do but its not a hotspot

True, I agree.
As for in the car, both my tundra and Sequoia are not great places, either the cig adapter in Sequoia or USB in Tundra would be better options, plus Mobley on the dash likely get better signal.
I'm thinking the 12vdc or I make a special connector and I can take to areas beyond my wifi either in my golf cart or tractor. As for semi permanent in house haven't decided if the 120/12 adapter or USB into router yet. Just looking for flexibility. :)

The main difference is that a new wifi router is going to have a significantly stronger signal than either the Mobley or a wifi extender. I've tried 2 or 3 extenders over the years and never been happy with their performance. They seem to often lose their connection and result in a device connected to wifi but with no actual Internet.

New router has 5GHz also, which can be faster for newer devices supporting it.

I have been told connect all old slow 2.4 wireless to 2.4 and newer faster devices to the 5g, that way the slower traffic doesn't slow the faster devices down, kinda like a slow car on the road. But probably at the speeds the mobley operates it doesn't matter.

Still had all the kids connect to the 2.4 and I am the only one using 5GHz to myself.

Got an email confirmation about an hour ago that my new Mobley is activated. Sitting next to window, 18.7mbs dl and 8.3mbs up on 105db signal, guess I'll keep it :) Later, I'll do the external antenna connection.
Firmware hasn't upgraded, but then its only been on 5 minutes. New router due to arrive tomorrow but I won't be able to get until Monday.
