As you can see anyone can weld up either the ring joint or the coped one. A good fitting makes it all so much easier.

Here's how we made the floating side rails work.

Here's another shot of the fitting up of a ring joint.

I have to believe this is going to be one of those ideas that will set a lot welder want to be's free.

Harv,

I've read you describe this method of notching pipe before, but I have a hard time visualizing it. Can you take some pictures or sketch something up to illustrate it? Any tips on cutting saddles on pipe?

This is posted somewhere up in projects I'm sure. Here's a shot of half of a saddle cut on a piece of two and three eighths with a portaband.

Here's another shot of the same cut.

This is also the perfect cut if one's doing an angle like going up a bank or a flight of stairs.

Here it's just half of a saddle.

If you look at this photo you will see where I pull my measurement for cutting the saddle. I measure from the point on the horizontal pipe that's fartherest away from the curve on the vertical pipe.

With two and three eighths this is usually about five eighths to three quarters of an inch.

This piece here is a pre-notched piece for two and three eighths that's notched with a punch press.

If you're cutting in joints between posts these can come in real handy if you're not good with cutting saddles. All you do is pull your measurement inside to inside.

Subtract one inch from that measurement.

Tack one of these in alignment on each end of your pipe you've just cut. You will now have a joint that even Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder could weld up with little problem

You do have two extra welds, that's true. But those two welds might go faster and be neater and stronger than trying to fill in a bad cut saddle.

They're available at Plano Power Equipment in Plano Texas. They have an online presence.

Here's a post with two rails coming in. One with their adaptor and the other with my portaband cut saddle.

The light bulb has come on! I get it now Harv. Thanks for explaining it further! Now all I need is a portaband saw.
