Cheap logging winch

Nice job making do with what you have.

Don't listen to these guys. If you get a welder pretty soon you are dredging scraps out of dumpsters, lusting after metal cutting saws, and lining up 3 years worth of "future projects" DAMHIKT

For the big electric winch invest in a battery instead of cables and mount it right on the 3-pt attachment, then run some small charging wires from the tractor. If you have an Autozone you can get a Duralast deep cycle p/n 27DP-DLfor about $83.

Battery is not as expensive as i thought. Can I just take out my stock battery and put this in the tractor instead of carrying two batteries around? Not being a boat guy i don't know if marine batteries are a different size. BTW I already haunt dumpsters (current on the needed salvage list is a four by four screen of some sort) and just this week harbor freight sent me a coupon for a $100 arc welder. may be the place to start.

Nice job. I bought that same winch since it seemed like such a bargain, but have not used it. I'd be interested in hearing how it holds up. When it runs, it sounds like the gears are dry, but I didn't take it apart to look.

Sure! Just measure the space to be sure a 'Group 27' will fit.

I've been using that AutoZone 27DP-DL battery as my starting battery since 2007. I posted about it here.

Somebody in another thread said this is one of the things to watch for in HF equipment. He said he has found entirely dry gears in drills, right angle grinders, etc when he opened them up to see why they were noisy. Apparently Customer Setup needs to include this final inspection!

California - thanks for the long term report on that battery!

I bought one last summer for my boat and it's doing double duty on my welder.

The advantage of having a separate battery for the winch is that you will not strand yourself if you overdo it. I've heard stories of guys with 4-wheelers melting the posts off their little $90 batteries while winching.

So Mud,
Even though you're pulling high above the rear axle, that counterweight is keeping you from flipping back, is that right?
How much does your winch setup weigh? I've got a small Kubota as well. I'm wondering how I can do this in a similar manner without hurting myself. The remote switch must make it safer.

Thanks for posting so many detailed pics.

Oops. Today that battery quit. 8/2007 to 3/2010. It failed after serving through three (mild) winters. RIP.

The battery was unused for three weeks and it apparently self-discharged. (tractor has no accessories). It measures 10.6 V. One cell won't float any balls in the simple SG tester, several cells float 2 or three balls, only one cell floats all four. The charger immediately brings it to 13. 6 volts and cuts off, then a moment of cranking empties it.

If I can't find a Group 27 car battery at a reasonable price then I think I will replace this with the same deep cycle battery.
