New LS XR4046H (46HP, 35 @ PTO). I'm going to be leveling/flattening a slope (not dangerously steep) on our new property and want to put in about a 1000 sq/ft garden. I'll be using a 6' box blade to do the leveling. My question is, what's going to be the cheapest setup (this year) to get the garden ready? I'm assuming I won't need a 2 bottom plow since I'll already have the ground broke up with the BB. Would just a york rake do to get the clumps out? Should I look into getting a disc? In the long run a tiller will be in the cards, but money isn't there right at the moment.

1000 square feet isn't much. Put down the rippers on the box blade and work it until it's broken up well. Then rent a walk behind tiller. An hour or so and you will be done.

Well honestly man, what fun is that? Doing something without getting a new implement... Why do any project if I can't get at least 1 new toy, err tool?

Thanks, that's actually the answer I was hoping for. I'm hoping that the wife and I actually enjoy the garden and wish to expand it in the coming years, but, unlike tractors, they always say "Start small"...

I haven't got one yet but a subsoiler/ripper is on my list. The box blade scarifiers don't get too deep. And then there's pallet forks to carry stuff around on the rear.
I think the Titan 3 point to receiver hitch is my most used toy(er tool) so far but I have. Boat that I move outta the shop a lot and a cargo tray I stick on it to carry junk on.

I'm one of those guys that if I throw something in the bucket to carry back to the shop I will promptly forget it and dump it on the ground! Hence the cargo tray.

A Roto-Tiller is the best implement for gardens. Soil prep is done in one pass.

A Disc Harrow and a Roto-Tiller are both forms of soil mixing tillers.

First rule of projects: Every project requires at least one new tool.
A lot of my friends wives did not like it when I enlightened their husbands about this rule, they on the other hand embraced it wholeheartedly. My wife is somewhat resigned to it, although after thirty seven years of diligent application of the first rule of projects I am starting to have a few that I really don't have to apply it

Agree...And even though the OP's tractor will handle a larger tiller...48" used tillers in good working condition can be had for $600 and up...

Although I'm only going on 8 years of having to explain that to a wife, I've made sure it was explained even before we were married. There are many benefits, most of which it appears is keeping the honey-do list manageable.

I keep forgetting about this. I find myself often sizing the implements to the tractor and not the job to save money (at least in the near term). I'll keep my eyes open.

If (and when) you buy a tiller, be sure to get a tiller that covers the width of your wheel tracks.
An "offset" tiller is also an option, to cover your wheel tracks.
Agri Supply has an interesting offset "Caroni" brand tiller, at what seems to be a great price, but I know nothing about the weight or the quality.
I have a new 60" King Kutter, and it weighs 650 lbs. (a heavy tiller is good).
Seems like you might need at least a 72" tiller for the size of your tractor.
If you watch prices carefully, you will eventually find new tillers at good prices (November- Jan.?) from sellers like Rural King, Blaine's Farm & Fleet, Agri Supply, Mills Fleet Farm, Northern Tool etc., that can sometimes be drop shipped at very favorable freight rates, and with no sales tax. I found Blaine's Farm & Fleet to have the best shipping rates by far!

Nothing does garden prep like a good tiller!
