Chest Freezers

Very true that a chest freezer will store more but I like and have an upright. Mine is also frost free. The food last long enough for me, I am trying to finish off a ham that I cooked three days ago after it had been in the freezer since January 2017. Tastes fine.

I've got three bags of chicken parts I've been accumulating in the freezer for the past few months waiting for a good day to make chicke soup. :licking:

My probe is just stuck to the underside of the lid. I figure that's probably the warmest and would be the first area to get above a danger level.

When the wife and I got married, she had a Frigidaire chest freezer that was used when she bought it, 30 years later it's still sitting in the laundry room, doing great. I did replace the lid gasket about 5 years ago. I know it's not one of the newer energy efficient models but I can't bring myself to get rid of it. During that 30 years, we've had two upright freezers die on us.

Still never really got an answer where to best mount my probe. I would like it through the side. It's bone chilling cold here, minus 35c wind chill. Good time to put the food outside.

The piping that circulates the freon must run around the top foot or so of the walls, because when you turn one on, you'll see the aluminum skin inside start to frost up there first. Makes sense, since the cold would fall from there on down inside. I'd avoid drilling any of the cabinet wall not knowing where the tubing runs.

Over the years, we've had both chest type and upright. Chest for efficiency, upright for convenience, and small footprint. I'll never forget when a neighbor friend across the alley behind us came over one hot summer day and borrowed my little air-compressor, took it home to air up the tires on his daughter's bicycle, then returned the compressor. A few days later, that family went on vacation. And a few days after they returned, the wife went out in the garage to get something from their chest type freezer and when she opened it, the stink was horrible. She went back in the house and called husband, a bank vice president. He came home, opened the freezer, slammed the lid, and ran out in the alley to puke. That freezer was nearly full. Then he remembered . . . . when he borrowed my little air compressor, he unplugged the freezer to use that outlet for the air compressor. Then he returned the air compressor, but forgot to plug the freezer back in. They drug that freezer out of the garage into the yard. SHE took everything out of it, put it all in plastic bags and they hauled it off (fortunately they had a little pickup truck). They tried baking soda, vinegar, and I don't know what all, trying to clean that freezer out, left it open in the yard a couple of weeks, etc., finally gave up and had it hauled off.

Sure you did. Several people suggested the probes that just run a wire out the door. No need to drill anything.

Exactly correct !!!

The wings make suitable lobster bait.
Guess you are a bit far inland to make that work though.

We've had an "Imperial Commercial Freeze" for the last 13 years without a hiccup (upright model which I do like). Can't really find who makes the freezer (didn't look too hard) and I'm guessing its just a private lable as I've seen the same freezer with some other food companies who deliver.

We got the freezer which was included when we signed up with Southern Foods, but we dropped them (southern foods) about a year and half of buying food from them (no issue with the product, just very expensive).

Generally keep the freezer set to 0F

Always have to defrost it from time to time.

As far as sensors or alarms, never felt like we needed one. Generally someone is usually getting something from it LOL

Sent this to my buddy in Texas to show him we do some things big in NC to LOL
