My Mahindra HST manual has a few choices of hydraulic fluid in the manual. One of them is Chevron 1000 THF. Chevron has treated my engines well but I don't know much about hydraulic fluid.
I see a lot written about Tractor Supply fluid but I don't have that option near me. I have Wally World and the local auto parts stores.

Thanks for the input!

The Chevron fluid might be tough to find. It's also not cheap. I happen to have tried to find 10 gallons of it recently. Price I got was $159 for a five gallon pail. If you're going to spend that kind of money, might look at the Amsoil 5w-30 synthetic hydraulic fluid. Lots of satisfied users here. You can look it up, but I'd be very surprised if it doesn't meet OEM specs for your machine. I got a similar price on the Amsoil, and it was easier to find.

I opted to use Kubota's synthetic hydraulic fluid, SUDT. It was $100/5 gallon pail.

Personally, I don't have any interest in the tractor supply stuff for a HST machine. In some old iron, for sure, but the extra money spent on something better makes sense to me in this application.

Lots written on TBN about this.

I started out in the 90s using Chevron 1000 THF from my local oil disti. It is a semi-synthetic tractor-hyd fluid
with equvalences noted to JD J20c and Kubota UDT. It looks and smells like other equivalent THFs out there.
I have been recently buying the Conoco 76 THF and ServicePro THF, which both have the same equivalences
noted, and smell/look the same.

I pay about $50/5gal for either. Note that Amsoil full-synth will run $150/5gal, and low-vis THFs (J20D and SUDT)
will also run a bunch more than $10/gal. In the cold country, you might have to run low-vis.

BTW, Walmart and Napa stores sometimes sell name-brand THFs, but for a lot more than the oil distis. Sometimes
tractor dealers like Kubota run specials on 5-gal pails of THF. I once found UDT at a Kubota dealer for $55/5gal.

Ok thanks for the replies. The manual lists a few others.
Citgo Transgard
Exxon Torque Fluid 56
Mobil Mobil Fluid 424
Texaco THD oil Special

Any info on these? Amsoil is out for me.

If the Chevron oil is equivalent to J20C just about any universal hydraulic oil will surpass that spec. Since you are in Idaho, I suspect that you will want to use your tractor to clear snow in the winter and thus will need a super low viscosity fluid, something thinner than the J20C. I would look at using a full synthetic like the Kubota SUDT2 or similar spec'ed oil.

Thank you for the advice. I guess I have a lot to learn on this subject. All of this is foreign to me- especially stuff that isn't in the manual but seems to work for folks. I didn't even realize the hydraulic fluid came in different viscosity.....

I'm surprised they list any options other than their house brand. What you need to do is look at the specification that they require for their fluid. For example, my NH needs the fluid to me meet a spec that they call NH134D. There's tons of oils that meet the spec, but New Holland won't list them all. Look for what the spec is in your manual. Then see if the Amsoil meets that spec.

Here's what the Amsoil meets:

$159 for five gallons.... they got you good.

I pay 70 some bucks for five at my dist, for a pristine new bucket of thf 1000. The refill is even less.

I'm running it in the 790 right now and have for the last couple years, zero issues even in the winter.

Its all the ol'man ran in his fleet of tractors for hyd. fluid for fourty plus and still counting years... Same thing, zero issues.

Most of the bigger farms in the area also use thf 1000 on this distributors bulk oil program also.

One logging I know of uses thf 1000 in all equipment for a hyd. oil.

If you're talking to me, heck no they didn't. No way I paid that. Bought Kubota SUDT2 for $100/5 gallons.

Actually, though, I think I was confused when i stated the price earlier. I got a price for Chevron All Weather HF, but I thinking the 1000 THF is different. My apologies for the misinformation.

Confusion on my end also motownbrowne:eek:

Chevron all weather is a full synthetic THF IIRC, as compared to THF 1000 the syn stuff is of course more... I studied tractor hyd. fluids in depth a while back comparing name brands deere, kubota and such to not really learn much other than most of deere oils come from chevron oil. Dealers where of not much help for this, cause no other oils existed but there brands:) I do know ALOT of equipment around these parts use THF 1000 and have nary a problem

I did read somewhere to avoid 'wal-mart/farm supply store' oils, using those names and terms loosely, for bargain type hyd oils not being very consistent of actual oil additives causing issues.

Thanks for the info. I studied my manual and it lists the fluids mentioned above. However it lists nothing with regards to ratings, viscosity or class. It simply states "hydraulic transmission fluid"

Spruce-
Thanks for the info about not being able to learn much about different fluids. At least I don't here anything bad about Chevron except cost....

And since I was wrong about the cost, it should be all good. 70/5 gallons isn't bad at all.

You bet RNeumann. The label on one of the empty buckets I have of thf 1000 has a detailed for "for use in" list also. THF 1000 works good for me and at a reasonable price.

The machine is a Mitsubishi chassis with Mahindra engine and loader. I called the local NAPA and they sold house brand and Valvoline. For some reason Valvoline isn't a choice in the manual. But with nothing listed in the manual regarding a spec I asked if he could order any of the ones on the list. NAPA said no but sent me to a oil distributor I didn't know was in town. They have the Chevron in stock for $52 out the door.
Thanks for all the help. If I find anything on the web that would help explain the different hydraulic oil specs I'll post it here- as I'm still in the dark on some of it.

More folks should locate their nearest local oil disti. I get my THF there, but also my 5W30 motor oil for my
road-going vehicles in 5-gal containers. If you have your containers refilled, then you can often save even
more. Mine are filled from large dispensers kinda like buying gas or diesel.

The key thing for tractors with HST and wet brakes is to use a THF, not a straight hydraulic oil. If a customer
just reads the label, s/he can see what the certified equivalents are. All the name-brand (plus ServicePro) oils list
as many as 50 name-brand equivalent products on their labels.

I have seen generic hyd fluids with no certifications on the label. Don't get that, even if it is only $5/gal. You
can find these at Walmart or TSC, but note that Walmart and TSC also carry certified THFs as well. Read the
labels, and go for special lo-vis THF if you have to.
