IMO, the only difference in clearance in those pictures is the (easily removable) airdam under the front bumper.
If you look, the rocker panel/frame starts at the middle of wheels on both trucks, the Chevy just looks lower because of the airdam.

Looks matter. Most people will never drive down anything more than a dirt road. But they want a truck that looks like it can take you anywhere. The fact that GM decided to put that air dam on the truck is nobody's fault but their own. Sure it could be modified but so can any truck. But it's not going to help sell the truck, first impressions are final. Personally I think this is also the problem with the Tundra. The Tundra just doesn't look like it'll plow through a foot of snow.
