They had trouble passing crash testing. Cab would fold up

I looked at the Colorado, they had two at a mall and it looks like a car with a bed. The thing just looks like it has no ground clearance. Not sure who they are going to sell it to but I think it'll be old men and Chevy fans. Most of the young to middle aged men who buy this style truck either wants it to look like it can go off road (even if they never will) or want them for doing outdoor sports like kayaking and fishing. Just looking at this picture from Chevy's website you can see what I'm talking about.

I think it would pretty good with a different front bumper and/or a couple inches if torsion bar lift.

Most base 2wd trucks do look like crap in the front. F150 2wd base model are maybe the worst looking with the low big plastic air dam

I hope GM does well with their trucks. Competition makes all the brands better.

Thats funny the Colorado sits higher than my 1996 z71 full size. Sure the front air dam is low but thats for fuel economy you can take it off. My 2015 4x4 Silverado also suffers from low front clearance due to the air dam

I believe it was more to deal with the take rate on the extended cab and 8ft bed on half tons low volume. GM had To many variants they introduced the crew cab with 6.5' bed and ditched 8ft extended cab.
Edit:
Another frame would have driven more crash testing along with a whole lot more validation/durability testing. I'm almost certian it was never in the works i don't recall seeing any of this variant at the proving grounds

Same reason gm doesn't offer a standard cab on the new Colorado less complicated and far less costly for a fairly low volume truck.

Also the same reason why gm ditched manual transmissions in their fullsize trucks and v6 Colorado. I still wish they offered them though.

And for the record if i could have bought a 2015 silverado half ton 8ft extended cab it would be sitting my driveway.

IMO, the only difference in clearance in those pictures is the (easily removable) airdam under the front bumper.
If you look, the rocker panel/frame starts at the middle of wheels on both trucks, the Chevy just looks lower because of the airdam.

It seems that Chevy is at least taking a step in the right direction. We'll see how it holds up and whether it deserves the title. Tacoma has a long track record to stand on and Chevy should have had one as well but because of poor foresight, now they fnd themselves playing catch up.
