It beats it with less payload, less towing capacity, less cab room, lighter weight, less front axle capability, ect????:laughing::laughing:

HP and TQ are for bragging rights. Lets face it, the G80 locker is better than what Ford had at the time but its the most Micky Mouse Locker on the market.

Unless Ford has more, then it's the most important thing, right? LOL

Mickey Mouse??? Sounds like a true GM BASH to me.
Never knew "lighter weight" was a disadvantage. I always thought it was an advantage...:confused2:

The outcome was a given, otherwise Chevy wouldn't have done it. I wonder what the Dodge would have done? Did they pick a load that the Dodge couldn't meet because they didn't want it in the competition? Let's face it the test was stacked and G.M. Knew the outcome ahead of time.

Yes sir we where not invited !!!!

I guess what GM, Ford and Chrysler are trying to do is sell trucks and Ford now has 50% share of the heavy duty pickup market and must be doing something right.

For years, Ford has always concentrated on being a truck. GM relied on bling and Body by Fisher looks for the well dressed crowd. Mopar, well you only buy a Dodge for the Cummins.

The difference between GM & Ford is GM puts more power to the rear wheels and therefore the pavement than Ford does.

Ford can have all the crank HP brochure & bragging rights they want, but if GM puts more power to the wheels, GM would beat Ford every time. I think it's the quality of the Allison transmission and it's TC that takes a lower HP diesel and converts it to more RWHP than Ford.

From a contributor to the article:

Not including drag and rolling resistance (which should be similar in both trucks, since speeds were not excessive, and the same trailer was used), the trucks put the following power to the ground, averaged throughout the run:
Chevy Silverado w/Duramax = 212 hp
Ford Super Duty w/Power Stroke = 171 hp

That's a HUGE disparity and astounding considering a pretty substantial disadvatage to Ford in crank HP. No wonder Ford was so far behind at the end of the contest, it doesn't deliver nearly as much power as GM to the ground, according to the test.

Funny, cause my Dodge has been great. Comfortable. Nice looking. Tows a 5th wheel, or my bumper pull flatbed with a tractor on it. Gets me out deer and duck hunting. And back...

I was a Ford truck guy before I got my truck. Kinda thought a little like you mention. I've found it to be a great truck. I did not not get the full bells and whistles; just cloth interior. Has most everything else though. It's been just as comfortable as the Ford's my friends have, at least till lately(all three manufacturers have cushier stuff now).

If I could afford to go out today and buy new, I would get Ford or Dodge, probably Dodge because wouldn't want to be a guinea pig for the new Ford motor/trans.

The other thing is, I would still like to see an entry level, or "small block" diesel, less power, with lots more fuel mileage... Don't need 400hp/650tq for my 27' 5th wheel.

Mopar, well you only buy a Dodge for the Cummins.

Seems to me these Truck Shoot Outs should get serious and be a round trip on the 'Going To The Sun Highway" in Montana or the "Coquihalla Highway" in British Columbia.:D

Might get some real information on those routes!:D:thumbsup:

It's coming, just hold on to your Dodge for another year or two at most and you'll be able to replace it with a new RAM 2500 with a V8 5.0l Cummins diesel rumored to produce around 325hp/500lb.ft. or a V6 4.2l making 370hp/420 lb.ft. I bet it will easily see 25-30 mpg's and 18-20 towing.

I'd really like to see a small diesel which concentrates on fuel economy too. I'd hope that it remained an option in 3/4 ton and up trucks for those that need the suspension a heavy duty truck offers but aren't in a race with their loads. I'd also love to see some full size SUV's equipped with a smaller diesel. I'd buy a Chevy Tahoe equipped with a baby Duramax in a heartbeat if one was to be offered by the time my F250 is paid off.

I seriously doubt that is the case. I think GM picked a task that they were better at. The gearing of the tranny is what did it for them. As you know with dealing with old trucks like you do gearing can do a lot.

I have been driving a Chevy C60 dump truck a lot here latly. It has a 4 speed and a 2 barrel 350 but get the job done with about 185 HP or something like that. Just slow as @^&#%#.

Chris

I really have no opinion on any of the three trucks (including Dodge). But I did find it funny that they say both trucks have the same rear gear ratios yet they are talking about 0 to what ever. At those speeds accelerating I doubt either of those trucks got out of second so the tranny ratios come into play just as much as the rear end.

If you were closer I'd race your C60 with my Loadstar 1700. My MV466 has a little over 200 hp but the added weight of my all wheel drive probably makes it a wash. Of course I'll be the one who's not spinning their tires off the line .

Interesting articles. But can someone explain benefits of a "V" series diesel over an "in-line"?

I like the power curve of the inline motors.

Even in the fire engines I have driven, I like the inline better than the Cat3208's and 9V Detroits in our second out engine, and GMC Topkick water tender.

At least in our ditrict, all the apparatus bought in the last 8 years is inline diesels.
