Chevy vs Ford for work truck

Chevrolet fights back.

Frame twisting? On a tractor forum?

Sheesh, get a box grader and fix that road!

Maybe Ford should do a does-the-key-turn-off-from-a-bump-in-the-road-and-plow-your-#$%-into-a-family-of-six head to head test?

Frame Twisting.

My first rule when shopping for trucks was to ignore anyone who goes around brand-bragging and/or brand-bashing. I don't have time for cheerleading or tomato-throwing when making real decisions, and don't understand the urge people have to align themselves and defend a large multinational corporation because of what they drive. It's not religion for crying out loud, and all of these companies are corporate behemoths with comical Dilbert-esque problems.

Test drive them all, and you will soon start to see a winner emerge. It's pretty simple. When I bought my 2014 half-ton, I went into the process with no baggage and shopped/drove all the brands. Some got eliminated pretty quick based on things like gas mileage, feature/package availability, etc. Then it came down to the ones I liked to drive the most. The end choice came from a pretty solid decision process, and I was happy with the outcome and confident I made the best choice for my needs/situation.

I think all the big truck makers offer a good product and the differences are marginal. The trick is to find the one that matches your needs and budget the best.

The rest of the story is that Ford did a frame-bending ad in 2009.

The big news will be when all the manufacturers start supporting the SAE towing standards so the ******** tow ratings go away.

Toyota already does use SAE specs and nobody buys those trucks except people who drive Camrys that wanna tow their boats.

Yeah, they've only sold 600,000 this year.

RAM has adopted the SAE spec. GM announced they'd comply for 2013, then backed off when Ford said they would only support it on "all new" vehicles.

That is the big dilemma. Both are essentially the same price.

I can tell you how I made my 2013 purchase decisions between the three, I went with the one that has the most appealing interior, albeit very subjective. In my area I see 10 plus year olds from all three still running strong.

I just finished up researching my next fifth wheel tow vehicle, GMC and RAM came out on top, Ford failed. Ford failed because the payload of their F350 equaled that of 3/4 ton trucks from GM and RAM. I looked at a 2015 F350SD powerstroke Lariat SRW, the payload on the driver's door sill placard was 2385 pounds, that is about the weight of a fifth wheel pin box. In the Ford line, I would have to move up to a F450 to get the payload I need or move to a dual rear wheel configuration which I do not want. Second, Ford only offered a 60,000 mile powertrain warranty, 40K miles less than the other two.

The 2015 GMC Denali has the nicer interior (subjective, I know) and is the quietest cab of the three but not by much. I haven't made my final decision yet but I am leaning towards the RAM 3500 Limited with the Cummins/Aisin combination. The goal is to travel the country pulling a fifth wheel for two or so years and I want reliability. Chrysler isn't the best at engineering but they do good integrating reliable products like the Cummins. I'm not that trusting of GM, it is obvious they made a lot of poor engineering solutions over the past years and I think it will be a while before they can clean up their product lines.

For the record, I retired from GM in 2006 and get employee pricing. Money isn't making the purchase decision.

600,000 what?

Monster5601, something does not add up, because the payload on my 2006 F350 SRW is 3,700 lbs. And I have seen similiar trucks with higher payloads.

Same here. My 06 F350 SRW Power Stoke FX4 has a GVWR of 11,500# and a empty weight with me in it and 3/4 tank of fuel at 7,600# leaving 3,900# of honest payload.

In comparison the 05 GMC Dmax 3500 SRW 4x4 it replaced had a 9,900# GVWR and a empty weight of 7,400# measured the same way leaving 2,500# of payload. The 3/4 ton GM trucks that year had a 8,800# or 9,400# GVWR leaving about 1,500# payload.

By the way, my father and uncle both have EB trucks and guess what, no problems. Shocker!
