This is probably obvious to most, but I'm dense. Will a rooster of one breed fertilze the hens of other breeds?

I suppose if I had a rooster that turned out to be on the friendly and quiet side I would keep one around for chicks.

The right rooster will breed them all, but will get hybrids unless inside the same breed. Friendly if handle as a chick on up, like a puppy. Of course if too friendly will annoy you to no end. Forget about quiet, never seen one of those. Seen the commercial about sleeping before the rooster went blind?

Talk about dense, i did not even know had to give them grit if confined, did not lose any but they sure looked awful. You not feel that way.

Tony,
I am hoping that I get a buff orp rooster, and that he is "relatively" quiet. Then I would have the pure buff orp chics and the buff orp americauna cross, hopefully still some easter eggers.

I don't know that I will be able to use the kiddie pool as the chicks will be in the garage, and may get into chemicals and stuff the shouldn't, so I will probably just use a big tupperware. I should only need it for 4-6 weeks, I hope.

At 3 weeks they can fly amazingly high and run fast. Big tupperware?? They do need air.

Yeah, that is what most of the chicken websites suggest. A large tupperware or big cardboard box, tupperware is easier to clean, and putting a wire grate over the top. Maybe I will build a chicken tractor that I can fit in the back of my truck and after the first few weeks I can keep them in that in my garage. Then move them to the coop and run when they are finally big enough. Having the tractor would also allow me to let some of them graze new areas when I am out there. Hrmm, another build project, but it might be worth it.

Maybe build something like this. Easily movable for later use as a tractor, and more than big enough for growing chicks. Add a heat lamp to the top and all should be good. What do you think 4720?
