Not sure if TSC gets chicks from various places, but each chick factory has its own brew of diseases. Mixing can sometimes cause problems.

Chickens lay eggs, roosters make chicks.

If you have a really good 'setter', she will raise the little ones quite nicely. Rooster layers are usually a little scrawny, but tasty. White cornish are very good meat birds but do not over feed them, their little knees do not develop as fast.

Ok, I have found a hatchery in MO, that has a minimum of 15 day old chicks. This eliminates wondering about sex and breed from TSC. I was thinking of getting 10 buff orps and then 5 Americaunas. They have a 95% sex guarantee so I may get a rooster, but one wouldn't be bad. I had also thought about throwing in a partridge rock or two, as their hens plumage looks pretty cool, anyone have any experience with them?

The hatchery is Chicken Hatchery Poultry Hatchery Cackle Hatchery Chick Hatchery Egg Hatchery.

Let me know what all you experienced chickeners think.

So I figure with 10 buff orps and 5 americauna pullets with shipping my total should be $42ish.

Then for the stuff I need to get me started from TSC I am looking at another $90 dollars.

We have a bunch of 2x4's from some walls we tore down in our barn so all I should have to buy for the coop/house should be plywood, window, roofing, and doors. I am hoping to get as much as possible from the habitat resale yard. Hoping to be able to use a large tupperware for the brooder.

Please let me know if these prices sound about right and let me know what I am forgetting.

Ok, its bad when you have most of the recent posts, but I keep on coming up with questions.

If I get a rooster, and the eggs are fertilized, can I just leave some of them in the nest and will one of the hens tend to them and hatch them? And if so, do they need to be moved to a brooder, or do you just let mother nature take over?

Also, how much feed will 15 plus chicks go through in say a month?

Thanks

Toro, I'm not going to answer any of your questions because it sounds like you really need to visit the library and check out a good 'raising chickens' book. Then I can't give you any more misinformation  One bit of advise, however, on the chicken feed: buy a steel trash can with a lid to keep the rodents out and consider adding a mouse eating barn cat to your must have list.

I have been perusing the backyardchickens website and have been able to find some answers there, but all answers are helpful.

Davitk, I will invest in some more mousetraps, I can't stand cats, although barn cats have a purpose to I can live with them. We have a bunch around our property so they will take care of some, and I will use traps, we haven't had problems with them in awhile since we started trapping them last year.

toro, thanks for the link to the hatchery. I'm going to order from them too, as they are the only ones I've seen with a minimum as low as 15. I didn't really want to start with 25, and this will help out. If I get a rooster or two, they'll likely end up in the pot, and that will put me right about at a comfortable number.

Do you mind sharing what products you're getting from TSC? I'll be needing similar things and will shop there also.

I'm going to try and get by this spring/summer with just a chicken tractor, And get a coop built by late fall.

Home Depot has the 14 gauge welded wire that comes in 100 ft rolls. The 3 ft rolls are $39.30 and the 4ft rolls are $58.60. I'm thinking about a six foot fence with the bottom three feet being the welded wire and the top three feet being chicken wire. A 150 roll of chicken wire at Home Depot is $47.90.

My thought is that with a six foot fence, the turkeys will fly out when they are ready and be on their own. Then I'll just keep buying more chicks and adding to the population.
