If you really want to have fun, put the bug zapper in the house and run and plug it in. Not only will it attract all the bugs in the area but the chickens get free food, fried to a crackly crunch for the discerning chicken. In the run works a little better with less dust but have to keep it out of the rain.

Now theres a way to cut down on your feed costs that I hadn't thought of, nicely done.

I actually thouht of putting in a bug zapper, but I don't have one. Anyway, I got two suppliers of eggs. One charges 1.50 a dz and 2.00 for extra large. Another charges .75 for medium and 1.50 for large in S.E. Taxconsin.

Hey guys, I am now thinking about hatching some sex links. The guy I buy my eating eggs from now has a Rhode Island Red rooster and mostly white and barred rock hens. So I think hatching some out will allow me to sex them at hatch. Does anyone know if the roos are decent for eating as I obviously don't want roosters right now? I could sell a few too and make a couple bucks.

Yes, they would be edible, not as good as a true meat chicken, but edible. Or grind them up for chic burgers. Have even done that with old layers and they were good.

Would they taste better than what you buy at the store or not? What do you use as a binder for your chic burgers, i.e. what do you add to keep them together?

Ground them skin and all so did not need a binder, held together just fine in the pan, like a beef burger. Do not think they would on a grill though.

As best i can tell, every thing is better than the grocery store if not just taste than there is the safety factor, i know what i eat is ok or it is my fault.

You didn't grind up the bone too did you? Just wondering so I can try it down the road.

Yeah, that is why I am trying to do this. Eating organic is getting expensive so this is one small thing I can do. The bonus is now I have a place I can keep the roosters, and my sister-i-l and brother-i-l's. Unfortunately buying a cow for milk is out of the question right now.

Nope, no bones, debone and grind away, once or twice thru and can always add any spice or binder you may want to to mix in. 1 or 2 birds with the hand grinder (ligaments and such are a pain but do-able).

How about a goat? The milk is better tolerated by the human system anyway and less of those allegedly naughty fats. Tell the neighbors it is a new breed of flock guarding dog. So specialized that even the bark has modified!
