I think either one will work well. I don't think the white part of the plastic one on ebay moves, I think it just has a pressure valve to make it work like a regular waterer.

I hope you folks find this as humorous as I did.

Some time ago, we had to remove one of the roosters from the brooder as one or more of the other chickens was attacking him to the point where he had a bald area on his back and a bloody wound. Since that time, he's stayed in a cage by himself.

When we moved the birds out to the coop, this rooster (named Toby, BTW) was immediately attacked. We had a genuine cock fight going on. Not wanting to join Michael Vick, we removed Toby from the coop and returned him to the cage. From what we've read, Toby is and forever will be viewed as an intruder by the other chickens and will never be accepted back into the flock. Again, we don't know if this is true or not - just what we've read.

So, today I suggested to my daughter that Toby would probably like some fresh air and an opportunity to stretch his legs a little. I return to work on the coop and shortly thereafter, my daughter is coming to see me with Toby...on a leash. That's right, folks. My daughter fashioned some sort of harness and leash and was taking Toby for a walk. Surprisingly, Toby didn't seem to mind. Probably just happy to get out of the cage.

Here's a picture.

Bmac it's just like a woman to put a leash on the male species and walk them around.

Man I'm glad my wife won't see this post. :D

Cute kid bmac, you should be proud....

BMAC,
Those pics are really something. It looks like Toby has a pal! If those pics get out onto the 'net, you may start seeing the Paris Hilton's of the world out walking their chickens down Rodeo Drive.

You and your daughter may be onto a new fad:D ...

That is awesome! I think if you could perfect the harness you could have yourself a nice little niche market on chicken leashes, hehe.

How many roosters do you have? I don't know if it works with roosters but I have read if you put the outcast in a cage next to the run, or near the run they may get used to him and accept him at some point, but maybe not too. Heck if you let him run around the yard, the hens may see him out there and decide they like him more than "their" roosters. Although I doubt any of that would matter if Toby isn't willing to fight for himself.

Either way, awesome pictures. Kudos to your daughter on the leash.

Once you name them, they become part of the family!!!!

Eddie,
When are you going to annotate which have been achieved on your list of goals for 2008?

Just curious. You haven't been procrastinating have you;)

Podunk,

I certainly hope that my daughter will never have any association with the likes of Paris Hilton (maybe other than her income :D ). The Chicken Leash might turn out to be like the Opti Grab (only those familiar with The Jerk with Steve Martin will get this).

Tororider,

Maybe a controlled reintroduction will work. Something to consider. We have 2 breeds - black cochins (like Toby) and blue silkies. There are 3 roosters in the cochin clan and I'm not sure with the silkies - the male characteristics are not as obvious. Toby seems to have problems with only one of the other 2 cochin roosters (Tony) from what I've seen. Tony has an attitude problem - he's drawn blood on me and my daughter. My thoughts were to segregate Tony and see if how Toby does with the others. But, my daughter is reluctant to do this for whatever reasons are going through her 10 year old mind. And, as these are her chickens I'm letting her make the management decisions (I'm merely a poorly paid laborer in this adventure). Toby is the largest and best looking of the cochin roosters and should show the best come fair time. Tony, on the other hand, would be better as the meat portion of a chicken biscuit.

But, as Eddie said, once they have names they are part of the family. Hard to convince my daughter to eat cousin Tony.

What income? Her parents handing her money? I didn't know being on the front page of tabloids paid a salary, I may have to look into that, hehe.

If he has drawn blood, I wouldn't even give my sons a choice, the rooster would be soup. You figure he is only going to get bigger, along with his spurs. I wouldn't chance one of your daughters friends going in there and getting spiked and then her parents making a ruckus. But I am not there, so I don't know how bad it is, but if one of my chickens drew blood I would be the next one drawing blood, I just wouldn't chance it.

I don't know if it really makes any difference on how he inflicted the injury, but did not involve spurs. He pecks if you mess with his "girls". And, on 2 occassions he grabbed enough meat to break the skin.

Re; Hilton. I was surprised to read that she actually is a successful business woman. Granted, her name and daddy's money were instrumental in any income she may be earning. But her company (or companies) do make money. I was shocked to read this.
